A bomb threat was called into the Oxford Middle School in Oxford, Mississippi on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
The Oxford School District would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the students, staff, families, and first responders who assisted during yesterday’s incident at Oxford Middle School involving a reported bomb threat.
We are especially proud of the faculty, staff, and students at Oxford Middle School for the calm, orderly, and professional manner in which they responded throughout the situation. Our staff followed district crisis response protocols exactly as trained, ensuring the safety and accountability of students at every step of the process. Likewise, our students demonstrated maturity and cooperation during the evacuation and reunification procedures.
We are also deeply thankful for the immediate response and partnership of the Oxford Police Department, Oxford Fire Department, University Police Department, Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Southaven Police Department, MSU Police Department, Desoto County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Medical Services, and all additional agencies and personnel who assisted throughout the event. Their quick action, professionalism, and coordination helped ensure a safe and efficient response.
Incidents such as this serve as an important reminder of why school-level and district-wide crisis response plans are essential. The Oxford School District continuously reviews and updates these safety procedures to reflect best practices and evolving safety needs. In addition, every school in the Oxford School District conducts monthly safety drills and ongoing staff training so that employees understand the protocols and procedures necessary to protect themselves and our students in emergency situations.
We would also like to remind all families of the importance of maintaining current contact and emergency contact information. Accurate parent and guardian contact information is critical during emergency situations and allows schools to communicate quickly and effectively with families. If your phone number, email address, home address, or emergency contacts change at any point during the school year, we strongly encourage families to notify their child’s school immediately so records can be updated.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff will always remain our highest priority. In the coming days, district leadership will conduct a full debrief with responding law enforcement agencies, school administrators, and district personnel to review every aspect of the response. We will continue refining our procedures and making any necessary improvements to ensure we remain fully prepared for future situations.
We appreciate the support, patience, and trust of our families and community as we continue working together to keep our schools safe.
