In a town where music is as much a part of the landscape as the oak trees and historic Square, a new form is taking shape—something rooted in tradition but driven by fresh perspectives. Mississippi blues singer Effie Burt is bringing together a dynamic group of female musicians under the name Blue Velvet, a project that promises to add a fresh layer to the musical fabric of Oxford.
In a recent conversation, Burt described the origins of the group as both intentional and spontaneous. The project began to take shape after she received a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission a couple of years back. What started as her effort to help “keep blues alive” eventually led Burt to something more collaborative and community-driven.
“I ran into people at just the right time,” Burt explained, recalling how connections with fellow musicians helped bring Blue Velvet into focus. Among them are seasoned players and emerging talents alike, including bottleneck-slide guitarist Wendy Jean Garrison, guitarist Andrea Staten, and percussionist Jennifer Mizenko. But perhaps the most striking addition to the group is a 16-year-old bassist, Reese Robinson, whose talent immediately caught Burt’s attention.
“I saw her playing at North Baptist Church, eyes closed, completely locked in,” Burt said. “Afterward, I just had to ask her what else she could do. She came to rehearsal, and that was it—we knew she had to be part of this.”
That blend of experience and youthful energy is central to Blue Velvet’s identity. Burt emphasized that the group isn’t just about performance—it’s about collaboration, and creating space for women in a genre historically dominated by men.
“This is about showcasing each other,” she said. “We’re not trying to fit into anything that’s already out there. We’re doing it our way.”
Blue Velvet’s lineup reflects that philosophy. With multiple instrumentalists, including electric bass, percussion, and occasional upright bass and keys, the group is building a full, textured sound. At the same time, Burt insists the focus remains on feel and authenticity rather than strict structure.
“We’re not going to have people come up and tell us what to play,” she said with a laugh. “We’re going to do what we do. That’s the whole point.”
That independence sets Blue Velvet apart in Oxford’s already vibrant music scene. While the town is known for its abundance of live music, Burt believes the group offers something distinct—both in its all-female lineup and its approach to collaboration.
“There’s a lot of great musicians here,” she said. “But this is different. We’re coming together with a shared purpose, and we’re lifting each other up in the process.”
The project hasn’t been without its challenges. Burt alluded to the realities of coordinating multiple musicians with different backgrounds and schedules, as well as navigating creative differences. Still, she approaches those hurdles with a sense of perspective.
“I’m too old to be mad about anything like that,” she said. “This is supposed to be fun. And it is.”
That sense of joy and resilience is especially meaningful given recent events in Burt’s life. During the interview, she recounted a serious health scare involving an allergic reaction that left her hospitalized. The experience, she said, only reinforced her commitment to the music and the people around her.
“I’m here for a reason,” Burt reflected. “And part of that is this—bringing people together through music.”
As Blue Velvet prepares for upcoming performances, there’s a growing sense of anticipation about what the group might bring to local audiences. Burt hinted at future shows and promotional efforts, including photos and potential media coverage, but for now, the focus remains on building the music itself.
For a town like Oxford, Blue Velvet feels like a natural evolution. It honors the deep roots of Mississippi blues while opening the door for new voices and perspectives.
“We’re just getting started,” she said. “But I think people are going to feel something when they hear us. That’s what matters.”

Awesome!!!
