For nearly three decades, the choir has been a cherished holiday tradition, bringing together more than 80 singers from North Mississippi and the Oxford community for its annual winter concert.
Oxford Civic Chorus invites you to celebrate the season with its annual winter concert, 3 pm December 12 at David H. Nutt Auditorium.
This year’s program features beloved Christmas favorites beautifully arranged by acclaimed contemporary composers, including Howard Helvey, Dan Forrest, Elaine Hagenberg, and Molly Ijames.
Over the years, the ensemble has grown into a vibrant, multi-generational chorus known for its warm, rich, and resonant sound. Audiences will enjoy familiar seasonal melodies presented in full choral settings, showcasing lush harmonies and the power of a large choir. Concertgoers are sure to leave humming their favorite Christmas tunes and feeling inspired for the holiday season.

The chorus is continuing its Conducting Fellows Program, highlighting the next generation of choral leaders. Four young conductors will each take the podium to lead the choir in a selected work during the performance.
Adding the voices of the next generation of singers, Batesville Junior High Chorus is included in the program, presenting a couple arrangements of well-known Christmas carols. To close the concert, they will join the Oxford Civic Chorus in a special holiday arrangement.
Oxford Civic Chorus Artist Director Dr. Debra Atkinson says of the pieces: “Exploring music for this year’s holiday concert led me to a deeper appreciation for the stories behind many of the carols we know and love. This program takes us on a musical journey that celebrates the traditions that have shaped Christmas
around the world. Along the way, you’ll hear familiar favorites as well as a few hidden treasures, each reflecting the joy and spirit of the season.”
This concert is free, funded by donations from the community and in part by a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. The choir also received a grant from Lafayette Oxford Foundation for Tomorrow (LOFT).
Oxford Civic Chorus, a 501(c)(3), has been inspiring singers, enriching community and expanding musical horizons since 1998.
