Mid-Town Farmers’ Market fans and customers,
and below are some expected highlights. In addition, this Saturday (and the first Saturday of every month) is a children’s day, for which Sue Castens will conduct an informative and fun activity using the new Choose MyPlate guidelines for healthy eating from the USDA.
- The Original Grit Girl will have Grits, Corn Meal, Masa and Polenta
- Sherry@ 7D Farm will have apple-cinnamon biscuits, chocolate bread, cinnamon bread, monster cookies, whole wheat bread, whole-wheat with quinoa, oat bread, facaccia, brioche, rolls, challah
- Welcome Valley Farms will have home grown “Panola County” tomatoes and green onions
- Zion Farms will have chicken, pork, and eggs
- Sophie Quinn of Joyous Plants will have moonvines, Louisiana iris, and maybe basil and cookies
- Mark Brewer will have broccoli, lettuce, onion, spinach, turnip greens, mustard, collards, and radishes
- Errol & Sue Castens at Providence Farm will have sungold cherry tomato plants, blueberry muffins, mexican wedding cakes, yeast rolls (salt free), savory beer bread, english muffin bread, whole wheat bread, and Mrs. Sue’s famous fire and ice pickles and roasted red pepper hummus
- Bost Farm will have spinach, turnip greens, hosta plants, and possibly broccoli
- Sunlight Springs Certified Organic Produce will have Cabbage, Kale, Spinach, Lettuce, Turnip Greens, Mustard Greens, Radish
- St. Bethany Fresh will have vine-ripened, pesticide-free tomatoes
- Mardis Honey will have honey
- Cathy Field will have three kinds of focaccia bread: Olive, Rosemary, and Basil Pesto
- Linda Boyd will have lettuce mix, romaine mix, asparagus, assorted herbs, blueberry jam, rosemary-lemon jelly
- Yokna Bottoms Farm will have six kinds of lettuces, two kinds of spinach, Fun Jen cabbage, Blues Chinese cabbage, mixed radishes, Hakurei turnips, broccoli rapini, spearmint, and green garlic. May also have baby onions and mixed mustards
We will have live music this week (from ~8-10 on Saturday) from Love Cannon. If you enjoy the music, please consider showing your support for the musicians with a tip (or some produce), who are not getting paid for these gigs. Did you know that Bost Farm can accept EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) for payment? If you know anyone who receives food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp Program), please let them know that they can now use EBT to purchase fresh healthy food at Mid-Town Farmers’ Market.
The Wednesday market may begin next week, depending on how many farmers have extra produce. Watch for another update on Tuesday about that. Please note that during the Wednesday market hours (8am to 1pm), our vendors may arrive or depart any time during those hours, depending on availability of their product.
We need volunteers to help at the market tent this summer. If you are interested in helping, please contact our volunteer coordinator Betty Crouther (arpate@olemiss.edu).
