The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating a Monday afternoon crash on Highway 334 involving a Lafayette County School District bus and a passenger vehicle that fled the scene.
Lafayette County Sheriff deputies were dispatched to the crash at 3:32 pm Monday, April 27, 2026. The driver of the passenger vehicle left the scene before deputies arrived. No injuries were reported.
The Lafayette County Fire Department, Lafayette County Emergency Management Agency, and Baptist Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is leading the investigation with assistance from LCSO investigators. Detectives have identified a person of interest, but no name is being released at this time.
Sheriff Joey East said the case will be pursued aggressively.
“The safety of our children and the men and women who drive them to school every day is non-negotiable,” Sheriff East said. “In Lafayette County, there will be zero tolerance for anyone who puts our students or our bus drivers in harm’s way.”
“Leaving the scene of a crash involving a school bus was a very poor decision, and we will work alongside the Mississippi Highway Patrol to make sure whoever is responsible is held fully accountable.”
LCSO will not be releasing additional information at this time.
