For the past several Fridays, City Grocery Restaurant Group’s catering kitchen, The Main Event, has been holding pop-up lunches at their North Lamar facility.
The first, which featured varieties of Bánh mì sandwiches, sold out within 45 minutes. The following week’s Dim Sum menu lasted only 20 minutes. The third week shook things up a little by moving up the road to the old Lamar Lounge location, with plates of ribs and fixin’s on the day before Independence Day. To say that these have been popular would be an understatement.
More opportunities to take advantage of these special menus are coming up throughout the month of July and continuing into the summer.
On July 10, look for the “Gas Station Classics” Pop-Up, when they will be cranking out meat pies, pizza sticks, citrus-braised beef taquitos with salsa roja, French fries, and Crackerjack ice cream. On the menu the following week will be elote, shrimp ceviche, tacos, churros, and more delicious fare in the theme of “Mexican Street Food.” Then, Friday, July 24 the Main Event staff will serve up “Plate Lunch Food,” which is sure to be a hit (twice-fried chicken and cornbread, anyone?).
All pop-up plates are sold take-out style following the “Serving Oxford Safely” guidelines. The staff will be wearing gloves and masks at all times, and are taking orders “car hop” style or over the phone to ensure social distancing requirements.
Each of these events will take place at the Main Event parking lot starting at 11:30 am, and are first-come, first-served. The creative menus are cooked up by Chefs Bryan Sapp and Andy McCown, and you can expect more fun themes in the coming weeks.
