UM Choral Concert Celebrates World Peace Day
Performance features UM Chorus and guest choirs
A World Peace Day Concert set for Friday, September 20 at the University of Mississippi will bring together more than 350 performers for a choral celebration for peace.
The concert is set for 7:30 pm in the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free and all are welcome.
The university is part of a worldwide musical collaboration, AVoice4Peace, that shares its message of peace through singing.
“In 2016, we were privileged to host the Nairobi Chamber Choir and their director, Ken Wakia,” said Donald Trott, Ole Miss director of choral activities. “It was during this tour that he came up with the idea to start AVoice4Peace to form a worldwide movement of singing for peace each year on World Peace Day.
“We have participated each year since and we all find participating a meaningful way to make a statement for peace through what we do best: singing.”
The performance will feature the UM Chorus and Concert Singers, directed by Trott and Elizabeth Hearn; and the UM Gospel Choir, directed by Jasmene Mitchell. Three special guest groups also will perform: the Festival Singers of Florida Tour Choir, directed by Kevin Fenton; the Lafayette High School Choir, directed by Hannah Gadd Ardrey; and the Oxford High School Choir, directed by Thomas Ardrey.
