Poetry: “Postman” by Jack Walters (from TLV #163)

postman

by Jack Walters
i am a forger,
Replaced, names and dates are a specialty.
a burden brings fire
after the post man is late on his route.
it was Chinaski
no wonder he’s hung over today too.
as it rained, dogs bit
and mud smeared ‘cross his uniform at dawn.

i hadn’t time to stick around and ask
i felt bothersome
had i stopped him, more behind he would be
in stabbing letters.
an outline of a flask shown in his pants
but he had no time
to talk but he would swig as he stabbed names
into tin boxes
