Ole Miss Hosts 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention Walk: “Out Of The Darkness” SUNDAY 10/14

UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL
SUICIDE PREVENTION WALK

Proceeds to Benefit the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

In the United States, it is estimated that a person dies by suicide every 15 minutes, which means that each year 34,000 lives are lost. It is also estimated that close to one million people attempt suicide each year. This year the UM-Clinical Disaster Research Collaborative, in conjunction with the Department of Psychology, Psi Chi, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will hold an Out of the Darkness Walk, and they’re asking for your help.

This will be the third annual Out of the Darkness Walk in Oxford, Mississippi, over the last two years they raised almost $20,000 for suicide awareness, prevention and intervention efforts and had over 500 participants.

By participating in this event, you will not only be showing your support by walking for the cause and donating money, but you will also be helping to save lives. The money raised in this walk will go towards research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increasing local and national awareness about depression and suicide, and assisting survivors of suicide loss.

The event is being chaired by Dr. Stefan Schulenberg and Brandy Baczwaski, professor and graduate student in the Psychology department, respectively.

The walk will take place on Sunday, October 14, 2012 in the Lyceum Circle on the University of Mississippi campus.

Registration starts at 12:30 p.m.
