Working brings to the stage the lives of teachers, millworkers, masons, waitresses, housewives, and other unsung working folks
Studs Terkel’s award-winning book Working comes to life on The Powerhouse stage in Oxford April 10 and 11 in a musical adaptation by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso directed by Christopher Schager.
Schoolteachers, phone operators, waitresses, millworkers, masons, housewives, and others tell of their lives and loves and trials with songs by composers Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Rogers, Susan Birkhead, Stephen Schwartz, and James Taylor.
The adaptation also includes contributions by Gordon Greenberg. Justin Wadkins provides musical direction with choreography by Jennifer Mizenko.
“This musical is relevant today due to its attention to the common worker in the United States,” director Christopher Schager said. “These stories are true to the spirit of the American psyche—an existence forged by tenants of a pluralistic, capitalistic democracy.”
With a rating of PG for parental guidance, the production takes place Friday, April 10, at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, April 11, at 2 pm and 7:30 pm.
Tickets for the event range from $15 for Theatre Oxford members and $20 for non-members to $18 for seniors and students.
All productions will take place at the Powerhouse located at 413 S 14th Street in Oxford. For more information, visit theatreoxford.org.
