Oxford Film Festival puts on Free Shakespeare Screenings

To kick off the year-round monthly film series, Oxford Film Festival is hosting the 400th anniversary celebration of William Shakespeare by presenting three free movies.

This free film series will commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. There will be three separate screenings over three days at Shelter on Van Buren, at 1112 Van Buren Ave.

The Shakespeare screening will kick off on April 11th at 7:30pm with the 1963 As You Like It staring Vanessa Redgrave and Ian Richardson. The film is about the overthrowing of Duke Senior and his daughters quest to find him after he was banished.

The April 12th film is the 1971 Midsummer Night’s Dream staring Lynn Redgrave, Edward Fox, Robert Stephens, and Michael Gambon. The comedy portrays events surrounding the marriage of mythical Gods. The New York Times says, “The allure and cleverness of that film, not to mention its far more Shakespearean spirit, make it a hard act for a hodgepodge to follow.”

The final showing of the series will be the 2012 Shakespeare and Us by Simon Schama. Shakespeare and Us is a fun exploration of Shakespeare and what his role was in shaping British culture.

While the film series is free, donations are appreciated. For more information visit oxfordfilmfest.com.
