Lafayette County, Mississippi Man Found Deceased Alongside County Road

At approximately 7:30 am on Friday, April 3, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department was called to County Road 1029 in reference to an unresponsive male lying on the ground. 

Upon arrival the deceased was identified as Douglas Smet of County Road 465, Lafayette County, Mississippi.

Mr. Smet was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office.  This is an ongoing investigation but at this time it is believed that Mr. Smet died of natural causes.  His family has been notified.

About the Author

The Office of Sheriff is a four year term filled through an at-large election process. Duties of the Sheriff involve two primary areas; law enforcement of the county and administrative. The law enforcement duties are to keep the peace in Lafayette County while administrative duties consist primarily of serving as the county jailor. Due to the growth of Lafayette County, the Sheriff Department now employs 26 deputies working four 12 hour shifts.
