John Cofield’s Photo of the Week: “Parks Barber Shop and the Army Surplus”

Today you’d be looking at Renasant Bank and Bouré restaurant. In 1961, the Army Surplus store was a draw for every wanna-be soldier in the county. Many a father took many a son for their first big-boy haircut at Parks Barber Shop where Ernest Oliver can be seen manning “First Chair.” And above, working under a single hanging light bulb is none other than William Faulkner‘s uncle, Judge J. W. T. Falkner, Jr, himself.

About the Author

John Cofield grew up in Oxford. He is a local historian and author. John is the son of renowned University photographer, Jack Cofield. His grandfather, J. R. "Colonel" Cofield, was William Faulkner's personal photographer, and for decades was Ole Miss annual photographer. Four generations of the Cofield family have contributed to Oxford's pictorial history.
