Hip Hop Invasion at Proud Larry’s in Oxford, Mississippi – Wednesday, February 1, 2012

 Do you like hip hop music? Do you like going to live hip hop shows? Well look no further, because there’s a fantastic hip hop show coming to Proud Larry’s Feb 1st featuring Memphis hip hoppers DJ Hush, Preauxx, Knowledge Nick, Royal T, & Oxford hip hopper Bill Mysteryo. This show promises to bring the best dank hip hop this side of the Mississippi River! Let me introduce you to the cast of characters.

DJ Hush

Oxford native DJ Hush has been a part of the Memphis underground hip hop since early 2000.  Hush has become a staple in Memphis underground hip hop and earlier this year signed with Jersey Sound Lab in New Jersey as resident DJ/ producer for JSL.  Prior to moving to Memphis, he & Bill Mysteryo had a duo hip hop act in Oxford from 2002-2005, and performed many hip hop shows together and also recorded an LP called “Identity Crysis”. Since then, Hush has done production and cuts for such artists as Sadat X (Brand Nubian),  El Da Sensei (Artifacts), Craig G., Quickie Mart and Gotham Green to name a few, and performed with such artists like the legendary KRS-ONE, O.C.(D.I.T.C.), Defari, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Planet AsiaInspectah Deck and Masta Killah (Wu-tang) as well as many Memphis emcees like I.M.C. (Iron Mic Coalition), Royal T, Knowledge Nick,  Cities Aviv, The Hater, & Taktix.  Recently, Hush just released TableTactics Mixtape  Vol. 2 which showcases some of his production as well as new hip hop music out now.  Future albums Hush has coming out next year are “Shoot Em Up” EP with Royal T releasing on 45 inch with Fat Sandwich Records next year, “I Got Love” single with Taktix on 45inch releasing also on Fat Sandwich Records, and many upcoming album features with artists recording at Jersey Sound Lab. Bill “Mysteryo” Perry is a local favorite in the Oxford music scene, and a prominent fixture in music throughout the state of Mississippi and the mid-south. Mysteryo has taken on many musical identities over the years (Jazz, Blues, Electronica, Funk, etc.) but his roots are Hip Hop. He has gotten the chance to open up for such big name hip hop acts like Snoop Dog (with Stork & Slim Goodi as Kush Pilots), Ghostface Killah of Wu-Tang Clan (with Nick B & Stork), and Lil’ Wyte (Kush Pilots). Mysteryo was recently featured on Memphis television with his trio act, Bill Perry Trio, on “Live At 9” on Channel 3 on Jan 10th, and will be featured on “Good Morning Memphis” on Fox 13 on Jan 27th! His trio also recently released their debut LP “Beyond The Darkness” on iTunes and will perform at this year’s Oxford Music Festival Feb 11th at Proud Larry’s. Mysteryo will also be releasing a hip hop single on iTunes called “Lovely” produced and performed by him and DJ Hush later this year. Knowledge Nick is a very prominent member of the underground hip hop scene of Memphis, with 3 albums to his credit: “The Enlightenment LP” (2009), “The Transcribed Sentiment” (2011), and the upcoming LP “Memphis: The Soul of Hip Hop” due out by this summer 2012. Nick has also performed for many venues throughout the Memphis area, and has opened up for such top name hip hop acts like Quickie Mart, and Gift Of Gab of Blackilicious fame. His music video “License to Kill” was “Music Video Of The Week” on livefrommemphis.com, and it also made it into the VideoCity TV Countdown in New York City. Next up is the Memphis emcee Royal T. He has been putting in work in the underground Memphis scene for quite some time. His album discography includes: “My Turn” (2007), “Throw Back Novel” (2008), “Raw Gospel Musik” (2010), “IDK” (2011), “4 All Seasons” (Fall 2011), and upcoming albums “Shoot ‘Em Up” (with DJ Hush) to be released spring 2012, and “Oppositez” due out this summer. Royal T has also performed at many venues in the Memphis area such as Hi-Tone (opened for Playa Fly and Cities Aviv), Escape Alley, Young Avenue Deli, Smoking Caterpillar, Full Moon, and has performed in venues in other cities like Woodlawn Collaborative in Chicago, and CMJ in New Orleans. And wrapping up the line-up of emcees is Preauxx (pronounced “Pro”). Originally from New Orleans, Preauxx now hails from the city of Memphis representing his unique brand of hip hop. His album credits include: “To Kill a Mockingbird” (2010), “Love Jones” (2011), and “When Caged Birds Sing”, which is due out by March 2012. Duval, headlined the “Money x Fame” show at the Young Avenue Deli, and performed at a big block party at Aquarius Studios to name a few. He has also been featured in the Memphis Flyer, made the front cover of the Daily Helmsman (University of Memphis publication), and also featured in the Commercial Appeal.
