Harmontown Man Arrested for DUI 1st Offense, Disorderly Conduct, & Simple Assault on a Police Officer While in the Line of Duty

On Sunday, September 24, 2023, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department Deputy was on patrol near the Teckville Boat Ramp in Harmontown. The Sheriff’s Department had gotten multiple complaints about ATV/UTV driving recklessly in the area. The Deputy noticed a UTV and conducted a traffic stop.

Upon speaking with the driver later identified as 62 year old Clarence Belden Howell of Harmontown, Mississippi it was determined he was operating the UTV under the influence. During the arrest, Mr. Howell kicked the Deputy in the face. Mr. Howell was charged with DUI 1st Offense, Disorderly Conduct, & Simple Assault on a Police Officer While in the Line of Duty.

A Justice Court Judge set Mr. Howell’s bond at $10,000.00

About the Author

The Office of Sheriff is a four year term filled through an at-large election process. Duties of the Sheriff involve two primary areas; law enforcement of the county and administrative. The law enforcement duties are to keep the peace in Lafayette County while administrative duties consist primarily of serving as the county jailor. Due to the growth of Lafayette County, the Sheriff Department now employs 26 deputies working four 12 hour shifts.
