Governor’s Concert Celebrating the Mississippi Bicentennial and More Moved Indoors

UPDATE: The Location of the Governor’s Concert has been moved to the Gertrude C Ford Center. This text has been update since publishing in The Local Voice #282 to reflect this change. Original ticket holders will have received an email where they can grab tickets for the new location. Remaining tickets will be available at visitmississippi.org/200.

All through the month of june, Mississippi is celebrating its bicentennial across the entire state. There will be three event locations. Celebration South will be held in Gulfport, Celebration Central is in Jackson, and Celebration North will be in Oxford.

It is a great honor for Oxford to be chosen as the home of the Bicentennial Celebration North. As the literary capital of the state and home to William Faulkner himself, the Velvet Ditch is no stranger to the great artists that call Mississippi home.

The Powerhouse has an artist gallery from June 1–30 and a Photo series workshop from June 19–25 where aspiring photographers can hone their craft.

J.D. Williams Library will be hosting a Mississippi Encyclopedia Panel Discussion on June 19 as well as opening the Mississippi: 200 Years of Statehood Exhibit on June 21 in the Faulkner Room

Families should stop by the University of Mississippi Museum on June 24 for Family Activity Day from 10 am–12 pm. Ticket holders will then want to make their way towards the Gertrude C. Ford Center for entertainment at 6:30 pm from winner of the 2015 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, David Lee, the Mississippi Bicentennial Symphony orchestra, and the Mississippi Bicentennial Singers. Following that will be the Governor’s Concert featuring Marty Stuart, Steve Azar, and Mac McNally.

Other events for Celebration North have also been affected. The live taping of Thacker Mountain on Friday at 5 pm has been moved to The Lyric Theater and seats will be given on a first come first serve basis. Blackwater Trio will now be performing at The Powerhouse on Sunday at 5 pm. The Local Voice Ligature
