Ventress Hall is on the left, and straight ahead is the Confederate monument, dedicated to the Confederate dead, over 400, from Lafayette County, which includes ten University Greys from Lafayette County and twelve University alumni from Lafayette County, all died in the War.
Women had already been students in the University for 36 years (1882) when this picture was taken.
Confederates and yankees have camped in this Circle. The University Civil War Hospital sick had been placed in tents in this Circle. Some of them had died here. Jefferson Davis, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Generals Grant, Sherman and James Longstreet, after the War, have been here, The University Greys drilled here.
