On March 5, 2026, the Oxford Police Department received a walk-in report regarding an attempted sexual assault that had occurred on the night of February 26, 2026.
During the investigation, officers learned that the reporting party had been in the downtown area before leaving and walking toward her residence. While walking along University Avenue, she was approached by a driver who offered her a ride home. After entering the vehicle, the driver took her to another location where he held her against her will and attempted to sexually assault her.
Through investigative leads developed by the reporting party and investigators, the suspect was identified as Keilun Treveon Lewis, 19, of Oxford, Mississippi.
Lewis was arrested and charged with Attempt to Commit an Offense (Rape) and Kidnapping. Bond was set by a Municipal Court judge.
This case remains under investigation.
The Oxford Police Department reminds residents and visitors to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Do not enter vehicles with individuals you do not know. When using rideshare services, verify the vehicle and driver through the app before entering, take note of the vehicle and driver, and consider sharing your ride information with a friend or family member.
When possible, utilize designated rideshare pickup areas located at the north end of the Square near the parking garage, the west side behind the Lyric, and the east side near Harrison’s and South 14th Street. These locations are well-lit and monitored by cameras.
If something seems suspicious or makes you uncomfortable, notify someone immediately and contact law enforcement. Downtown visitors are also encouraged to make use of available safety resources, including the Safe Site tent.
