Arrest of Hispanic Burglar in Paris, Mississippi Leads to a Hold for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

On August 16, 2025, Deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to County Road 430 for a man attempting to enter a residence through a window.

Prior to Deputies arriving on scene, the homeowner confronted the suspect, Luis Ortiz-Mendez (Hispanic male, 21 years old, of Paris, Mississippi), and was able to apprehend him.

Once deputies arrived on scene, Ortiz-Mendez was taken into custody without further incident.

Ortiz-Mendez was transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center, where he was later issued a $20,000 bond set by the justice court.

Ortiz-Mendez also currently has a hold for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Office of Sheriff is a four year term filled through an at-large election process. Duties of the Sheriff involve two primary areas; law enforcement of the county and administrative. The law enforcement duties are to keep the peace in Lafayette County while administrative duties consist primarily of serving as the county jailor. Due to the growth of Lafayette County, the Sheriff Department now employs 26 deputies working four 12 hour shifts.
