Chamil Gayashan Jayaratna (30, of Oxford, Mississippi)
On September 24, 2025, the Oxford Police Department responded to a residence off Old Taylor Road after a caller reported a male looking into her window. The homeowner provided Ring doorbell footage of the suspect, but responding officers were unable to locate him at that time.
Investigators assigned to the case did a search of previous reports for similar calls within the south Oxford area for suspicious persons or other peeping tom type of calls since this summer. While reviewing reports and body camera footage a similar description and name was provided from a call earlier in August. The name was cross referenced with a photograph of the suspect. That information led detectives to identify Chamil Gayashan Jayaratna (30, of Oxford, Mississippi) as the suspect.
An arrest warrant for Voyeurism (Peeping Tom) was issued, and on September 30, 2025, Jayaratna was arrested. He was booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center, where he remains pending a bond hearing in Oxford Municipal Court.
This case underscores the importance of citizens reporting suspicious behavior, no matter how minor it may seem, as well as the role of exterior security cameras in helping law enforcement identify and apprehend suspects.
The Oxford Police Department encourages the community to remain vigilant and continue reporting unusual or suspicious activity. This case could not have been solved unless the previous report in August had been reported to police.
