On May 6, 2021, Deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department took a report of a stolen vehicle in the Harmontown community. An investigation was opened and the vehicle was later recovered and returned to the victim.
Michael Edward Speed, 24 y/o of Harmontown, Mississippi, was ultimately arrested and charged with Grand Larceny.
Speed was given a $2000.00 bond by a Justice Court Judge, and is currently being held in the Lafayette County Jail.

The Office of Sheriff is a four year term filled through an at-large election process. Duties of the Sheriff involve two primary areas; law enforcement of the county and administrative. The law enforcement duties are to keep the peace in Lafayette County while administrative duties consist primarily of serving as the county jailor. Due to the growth of Lafayette County, the Sheriff Department now employs 26 deputies working four 12 hour shifts.
