Breaking News
At approximately 12:32 am on August 31, 2025, the Oxford Police Department responded to a large event at Booth’s Barbeque and Yard located at 2200 South Lamar Boulevard. In addition, there were parking issues around South Lamar Court, surrounding businesses, and city streets.
Due to the massive number of attendees, officers had to work parking lots of nearby businesses to manage traffic and crowds. The event drew a significant number of pedestrians into the roadway, creating dangerous conditions. Officers were redeployed from postgame traffic posts to assist officers on South Lamar.
At the height of the incident, approximately 20 OPD officers were required to restore order while the full downtown unit worked bar closing on the Square. The final officers cleared the area after 3:00 am. Officers made 42 traffic stops during that time period and discovered over 10 firearms during those stops.
While officers were on scene clearing a disturbance, shots were fired from a handgun at approximately 12:47 am. Officers immediately ran into the area and secured the business. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Antwan Terrell Tompkins, 19, of Tupelo, Mississippi, was taken into custody and charged with Aggravated Assault. His bond will be set today by the Municipal Court Judge.
Prior to the shooting, officers also charged Dezreke Meyel Douglas, 20, of Horn Lake, Mississippi, at the location for carrying a concealed weapon.
The event organizers were each cited and charged with Noise Violation and Inadequate Security:
- Tyler Bogan, 23, of Okolona, Mississippi
- Keith Jackson, 22, of Greenville, Mississippi
- Brandon Lott, 23, of Oxford, Mississippi
Josh Booth, 42, of Batesville, Mississippi, was also cited with:
- Lack of Security & Access
- Lack of Adequate Security Cameras
- Lack of Age Verification System
- Lack of Safety Plan
“We are proud of how our officers responded; they immediately ran toward the sound of gunfire to protect lives and secure the scene. One officer was close enough to witness the shooter still armed, pursue him, and safely take him into custody,” said Chief Jeff McCutchen.
“This dangerous situation could have had tragic consequences for first responders, residents, visitors, and hundreds of people in and around the venue. We are extremely grateful for the swift actions and bravery of our officers who responded without hesitation to protect our community. The Oxford Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety of our city, and we will continue to work with our partners to keep Oxford safe!”
