“I shall not be moved,” sang Mississippi John Hurt.
On Saturday, October 4, Mary Frances Hurt is honoring her grandfather’s spirit of faith and determination by kicking off the 2025 Mississippi John Hurt Homecoming Festival with the dedication of the Mississippi John Hurt and Jerry Richardson Educational Center which has risen from the ashes of the Mississippi John Hurt Museum that burned to the ground hours after being dedicated a National Historic Landmark in 2024.
The dedication ceremony will be followed by live music, an open mic invitation, and a screening of A Man Called Hurt: The Life and Music of Mississippi John Hurt. A Memorial Walk from the Educational Center to the nearby Mississippi John Hurt gravesite will take place on Sunday, October 5.
Co-sponsored by the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation and the Mt. Zion Memorial Fund, the festival is free and open to the public. All events will be held at 1973 CR 109, Carrollton, Mississippi. Visit the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation website for further information.
