University of Mississippi police Lt. Jason Welch has earned his FBI certification.
Welch, a 21-year law enforcement veteran with 19 of those at the University Police Department, recently completed the 10-week residential Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
The program focused on professional development for experienced law enforcement officers from around the world, Welch said.

“It included master’s-level classes, seminars led by subject-matter experts and physical fitness training and challenges,” he said. “Throughout the program, I completed numerous writing assignments, participated in classroom discussions and delivered presentations on various law enforcement and leadership topics.”
While Welch gained academic expertise, he also learned from other participants.
“I had the opportunity to build relationships with law enforcement professionals from across the United States and approximately 30 countries,” he said. “These connections exposed me to different cultures, policing practices and leadership approaches.
“Despite those differences, I discovered that we share many of the same challenges and goals, particularly our commitment to keeping our communities safe.”
The academy also provided time for self-evaluation.
“From a personal development standpoint, the experience encouraged self-reflection, adaptability, teamwork and leadership under challenging circumstances,” Welch said. “It also gave me the chance to step outside my normal responsibilities, evaluate my leadership approach and learn from others’ experiences.”

Several participants were from other colleges and universities throughout the United States. Together they shared common challenges and experiences.
“Those conversations gave me valuable perspectives and ideas I can bring back to the University of Mississippi Police Department,” he said. “Just as importantly, I now have a network of experienced professionals I can contact when facing unfamiliar situations or exploring new approaches.
“Having access to those resources will help us identify effective solutions that best serve our department, university and campus community.”
