“Oxford Town isn’t just the subject of a Bob Dylan song; it’s also ground zero for the study of the 2016 Nobel Prize winner’s Southern connections,” said Dr. R.J. Morgan, Instructional Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Mississippi and Director of the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association.
“Thanks to an initial private gift of $5,000, the School of Journalism and New Media has established a support fund for the study of Bob Dylan and the South,” said Morgan.
While the fund currently supports guest speakers and course materials, the ultimate goal is to expand the work far beyond the classroom.
“The fund builds on the success of a course by the same name, which uses Dylan’s music and career as a multidisciplinary through-line for the study of blues and folk revivals, the American Civil Rights Movement, alternative media, and Southern history, culture and literature,” said Morgan.
“Our upcoming Bob Dylan and the South Fundraiser will take place on October 14 at Proud Larry’s. Your contribution would create meaningful, transformative opportunities for our students,” said Brad Conaway, Instructional Assistant Professor of IMC.
Contributions directly create meaningful, transformative opportunities for students. Your financial partnership or event sponsorship, will help with launching:
- Student-run podcasts featuring original Dylan research
- Student reporting trips down Highway 61 and beyond, to civil rights sites and historic points of interest
- A dedicated Bob Dylan beat reporter for the Mississippi Media Lab
- Dylan-centric conferences and festivals in Oxford and beyond
- A Bob Dylan and the South scholarly journal or edited volume
- And much more
Tickets are available for purchase online; donations and sponsorships are also welcomed.
