The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) is honored to once again participate in the nationwide observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day, taking place on September 26, 2026. Governor Tate Reeves has signed a proclamation recognizing this day as Mississippi’s official observance of the annual celebration.
National Hunting and Fishing Day was established in 1972 to celebrate and recognize hunters and anglers for their significant contributions to fish and wildlife conservation.
September marks the start of hunting seasons for many in the Magnolia State, with opportunities ranging from dove hunting and deer velvet season to cooler weather for fishing. These traditions not only connect Mississippians with the outdoors but also contribute significantly to conservation and the state’s local and statewide economy.
Through the American System of Conservation Funding, Mississippi hunters and anglers generate millions of dollars each year to support wildlife management, habitat conservation, and outdoor recreation.
MDWFP encourages residents to celebrate this year by taking a friend or family member and spending time in Mississippi’s great outdoors.
“National Hunting and Fishing Day honors sportsmen and women whose passion and support have helped conserve Mississippi’s natural resources for generations. We are grateful to be part of this celebration,” said MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey.
