Oxford High School students Macon Harrell and Lily Kate Coughlin have been named in the top four Mississippi finalists in the inaugural Presidential 1776 Award for Civics, a national civics competition, earning a spot in the regional semifinal round. They will travel to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 2 to compete against fellow state finalists.
Macon and Lily Kate will compete in the Region 2 Semifinal Round, which includes students from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The competition highlights students’ understanding of civics, United States history, and foundations of American government.
The semifinal round is part of five regional contests held across the country. From those competitions, the top 20 students nationwide will advance to the national final round in Washington, D.C. this summer, where they will compete for top honors, including a $150,000 scholarship.
