The Oxford School District is delighted to share the progress of the Dr. David B. Sanders Jr. Memorial Recreational Area, a new outdoor space taking shape behind Oxford Intermediate School
Following months of local historical research, gathering community input, and the formation of a dedicated committee, the decision to name and dedicate the space in honor of Dr. David B. (D.B.) Sanders Jr. was approved last spring. Construction began several weeks ago, marking a significant milestone as this vision becomes a reality and celebrates the exceptional legacy of Dr. Sanders.

Dr. Sanders was a well-respected and transformative leader in the Oxford School District. His influence helped shape a defining moment in the district’s history as he helped guide the transition from segregation to integration in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During his tenure, he served as principal of Central High School, principal of Oxford Junior High School, and assistant superintendent. His leadership and dedication to students, staff, and the community left a legacy that continues to shape the Oxford School District today.

The district looks forward to sharing continued updates as construction progresses and to celebrating the completion of a space that honors its history and inspires its future. To mark this milestone, the Oxford School District plans to host a community picnic on the grounds this summer. More information will be shared soon.
