{"id":90267,"date":"2020-07-25T11:35:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-25T16:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=90267"},"modified":"2022-10-24T11:32:53","modified_gmt":"2022-10-24T16:32:53","slug":"dr-jos-milton-sings-in-operation-bach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/dr-jos-milton-sings-in-operation-bach\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Jos Milton Sings in Operation Bach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Operation Bach<\/strong>\u00a0is an outgrowth of friendships formed among musicians at the Carmel Bach Festival; faced with the inevitable cancellation of the 2020 festival due to<strong> Covid-19<\/strong>, they worked together to celebrate Bach chorales with a series of videos that they&#8217;re posting <strong>July 18-August 1.<\/strong> The music was recorded remotely by musicians around the globe to share music and honor the Festival, which would have taken place on those dates.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>University of Mississippi Associate Professor of<strong> Music Dr. Jos Milton<\/strong>, a member of our vocal faculty and part of the Festival\u2019s professional chorale since 2014, participated in the project as a tenor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe 14 days of posts include the 12 chorales from <strong>Bach\u2019s St. Matthew\u2019s Passion<\/strong>, framed by chorales from 2 other works,\u201d said Dr. Milton. \u201cThe chorales are short, and are based on Lutheran hymns that 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century audiences would have already known \u2013 in fact, many of these tunes are still well-known today. He said including Jos was a no-brainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe had a prominent solo during last summer\u2019s Festival that brought many of us to tears; a simple Irish tune that Jos sang with moving directness and warmth. Jos Milton is a distinguished vocal artist. I&#8217;ve enjoyed him in concert and in solo recitals, and the Carmel Bach Festival is lucky to have him in its performing ensemble.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding to the interest of this project is how it was edited together for a specific effect. After each musician recorded his or her part, the editor worked with <strong>Braxton Boren<\/strong>, a professor of audio technology at American University, who developed an acoustical rendering of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig where Bach was concertmaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cIndividual instruments and voices can be placed in arbitrary positions throughout the church and rendered into a coherent whole,\u201d explained Fields.
