Executive Director <strong>Melanie Addington <\/strong>had no way to predict the festival as planned would come to a halt in a few short weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oxford Film Festival was one of the first major annual events in Oxford to cancel in an attempt to stall the rise of <strong>COVID-19<\/strong>. Since March, Addington has been hard at work revamping the annual festival to virtual and drive-in platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we started the drive-in, only a handful of films were allowed to be screened by distributors. As the pandemic continues on, many distributors are opening up their archives to more films, including Disney and Paramount and Warner Brothers,\u201d said Addington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift in mindset has allowed her to screen favorites like <strong><em>Dirty Dancing<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Aqua Man<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>The Goonies<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Frozen II<\/em><\/strong>, and <strong><em>How to Train Your Dragon II<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"338\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/the-goonies.jpg?resize=338%2C500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/the-goonies.jpg?w=338&amp;ssl=1 338w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/the-goonies.jpg?resize=203%2C300&amp;ssl=1 203w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnly some independent films like <em>Miss Juneteenth<\/em> and <em>Tesla<\/em> have been available to book that are brand new films,\u201d said Addington. They also have several brand new indie films available through their online portal to rent at home including one of Addington\u2019s favorite films, <strong><em>Shirley<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oxford Film Festival has not only provided a space for locals to get out of their house and enjoy some extracurricular activity from the safety of their cars, but they are also employing 10 people in addition to Melanie Addington to work at <strong>OFF to the Drive-In<\/strong> in concessions, ticket checks, car checks, and other needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local businesses are taking notice\u2014including <strong>Saint Leo<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>Emily <\/strong>and<strong> Jolie Blount<\/strong>, who sponsored a second showing of <strong><em>Dirty Dancing <\/em><\/strong>when the first sold out quickly. I was able to go to the second night showing, thanks to their generous contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/back-to-the-future.jpg?resize=326%2C488\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90207\" width=\"326\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/back-to-the-future.jpg?resize=684%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 684w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/back-to-the-future.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/back-to-the-future.jpg?resize=768%2C1150&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/back-to-the-future.jpg?w=855&amp;ssl=1 855w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cannon Motors<\/strong> and <strong>Jordan Bankhead<\/strong> with <strong>Hendricks Steakhouse<\/strong> have contributed greatly to the success of the drive-in, and two sponsors\u2014<strong>Jones Farms<\/strong> and <strong>State Rep Tommy Reynolds<\/strong>\u2014have sponsored two free showings of <strong><em>Back to the Future<\/em><\/strong> during what would have been the annual <strong>Watermelon Festival<\/strong> in nearby <strong>Water Valley, Mississippi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OFF to the Drive-In is currently operating at a loss, but is willing to do so in order to employ folks and provide this entertainment option for the community.
