{"id":89746,"date":"2020-07-13T15:34:14","date_gmt":"2020-07-13T20:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=89746"},"modified":"2020-07-13T15:34:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T20:34:21","slug":"state-commission-seeks-flag-design-submissions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/state-commission-seeks-flag-design-submissions\/","title":{"rendered":"State Commission Seeks Flag Design Submissions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>House Bill 1796<\/strong> established a commission to redesign the <strong>Mississippi State Flag<\/strong>. <strong>The Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH)<\/strong>, which is providing clerical support for the commission, is now accepting flag design submissions. The sole purpose of the commission, according to the bill, is to develop, design, and report to the governor and the legislature its recommendation for the design of the new state flag no later than September 14, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Governor <strong>Tate Reeves<\/strong>, Lieutenant Governor <strong>Delbert Hosemann<\/strong>, and House Speaker <strong>Philip Gunn<\/strong> will each appoint three members to the <strong>Commission to Redesign the Mississippi State Flag<\/strong> no later than Wednesday, July 15. The chair of the commission will be chosen by the majority vote of the members of the commission during their first meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criteria<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Only unique flag design submissions that include the words \u201cIn God We Trust\u201d will be considered by the nine-member commission. Flag descriptions will not be considered.<\/li><li>The new flag design cannot include the Confederate battle flag.<\/li><li>Flag design submissions must adhere to principles of the North American Vexillological Association:<ul><li>Keep It Simple. The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.<\/li><li>Use Meaningful Symbolism. The flag\u2019s images, color, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes.<\/li><li>Use Two or Three Basic Colors.<\/li><li>Be Distinctive or Be Related.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline for submissions is August 13, 2020.\u00a0Flag designs may be emailed to Emma McRaney at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:emcraney@mdah.ms.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emcraney@mdah.ms.gov<\/a>.
