Produced by <b>Roger Moutenot<\/b> (Yo La Tengo, John Cale, and\u00a0JEFF\u00a0the Brotherhood), the album was recorded earlier this year with material written mostly during a tour-heavy 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><i>Blur the Line<\/i> opens with \u201cOh God,\u201d a heartbreaking track that invokes the disoriented feeling of being on the road, in \u201ca different city every day.\u201d It\u2019s a melancholy track, full of lush imagery in lyrics like \u201cAfter every toilet seat \/ and every ashtray of a night \/ the gas pump sidewalk sort of days\u201d buoyed by scorching guitar and a swaying back beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The album as a whole feels a bit more produced than their previous two, but in a good way \u2013 it bursts with textures and cool effects that give the songs depth and diversity that ranges from the stoner-punk, <strong>Go-Go<\/strong>-esque \u201cIn the Wilderness\u201d to the driving, dancing \u201cOptimist.\u201d There\u2019s a solid mix of some vintage psychedelia with the pop-punk energy Those Darlins are known for. \u201cThat Man\u201d makes me think of the 50\u2019s throwback style of <i>Rocky Horror Picture Show<\/i> and \u201cWestern Sky\u201d is reminiscent of <strong>Sonic Youth<\/strong>, only less noisy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">To quote their new bio, \u201cBlur The Line is a look inward, asking bigger questions and tackling an archetypal theme \u2013 the opposing forces that lurk in us and in our world. \u2018This may be the most important theme on this record,\u2019 says Nikki, \u2018Balance and finding balance within ourselves and others.\u2019\u201d This effort certainly differs from their earlier releases with its less rowdy tone and absence of the country roots of their debut album. With a lineup change since 2011\u2019s <i>Screws Get Loose<\/i>, Those Darlins are no longer a \u201cgirl-band\u201d; new to the group is <strong>Adrian Barrera<\/strong> replacing <strong>Kelley Darlin<\/strong> on bass, bringing the lineup to a 50-50, yin-yang, male-female balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">None of that changes the band\u2019s charm and sexual energy. Expect a more mature, thoughtful sound that still delivers a damn fun spin.
