Valentine will read from her new memoir, <em><strong>All I Ever Wanted<\/strong>,<\/em> and play songs from her new solo album of the same name. Texas novelist <strong>Paulette Jiles<\/strong> and blues slide guitarist <strong>Harlem Slim<\/strong> will also appear. All three guests will perform remotely via self-recorded performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The show is hosted by <strong>Jim Dees<\/strong> and Thacker house band, <strong>The Yalobushwhackers<\/strong>, also with prerecorded performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The broadcast can be heard <strong>Thursday, April 23<\/strong>, at <strong>6 pm<\/strong> on <strong>WUMS<\/strong> (<strong>92.1 FM<\/strong> in <strong>Oxford<\/strong>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/myrebelradio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">online<\/a>. The show will rebroadcast <strong>Saturday, April 25<\/strong>, at <strong>7 pm<\/strong> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpbonline.org\/\"><strong>Mississippi Public Broadcasting<\/strong><\/a> (90.3 FM in Oxford) and at 9 pm Saturday on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apr.org\/\">Alabama Public Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to health concerns, the radio show suspended audience-attended live shows at <strong>Off Square Books<\/strong> and the<strong> Lyric<\/strong> for the remainder of its April schedule. We\u2019re really excited Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go\u2019s responded with a reading from her new book and new music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kathy Valentine was just twenty-one when she was hired as bassist for the-then-fledging rock band, the Go-Go\u2019s, in 1980. Eighteen months later, the band had a multi-platinum-selling album and arena tour. The group is credited with being the first all-female band to play instruments themselves, write their own songs, and have a number one album.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"180\" height=\"279\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Kathy-Valentine-book-cover.jpg?resize=180%2C279\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86711\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Beauty and the Beat<\/strong><\/em> spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 and featured the hit songs \u201cWe Got the Beat\u201d and \u201cOur Lips Are Sealed.\u201d\u00a0 Valentine co-wrote several of the band\u2019s classics including &#8220;Vacation&#8221; and &#8220;Head Over Heels.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valentine\u2019s account of those years, <em>All I Ever Wanted<\/em>\u2014<em>A Rock and Roll Memoir<\/em> (University of Texas Press) traces the path that took her from her childhood in Texas\u2014where she all but raised herself\u2014to the height of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll stardom and the devastation after the collapse of the band.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the Go-Go\u2019s were scheduled to reunite for an eight-city tour before the coronavirus pandemic forced postponement. The titular character is an itinerant fiddle player who travels with a ragtag band of musicians. He enjoys the shadowy night life until he meets the charming young Irish lass who steals his heart\u2014with complications, of course. <em>Publisher\u2019s Weekly<\/em> said, \u201cJiles\u2019s limber tale satisfies with welcome splashes of comedy and romance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paulette Jiles is a novelist, poet, and memoirist. She lives on a ranch near San Antonio, Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Original Harlem Slim\u201d<\/strong> is the stage name for blues musician <strong>Tito Deler<\/strong>, a New York City modern soul man. Deler is reportedly working on a new release for <strong>Blue Front Records<\/strong> with <strong>Jimmy \u201cDuck\u201d Holmes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this week\u2019s show, <em>The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour<\/em> will continue to be heard at the above-listed times every Thursday and Saturday throughout the spring and summer.
