Nurses and nursing homes and hospice care have been our focus,\u201d said Harlow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wonderbird Spirits is providing the hand sanitizer in large format to hospitals and medical facilities, child protective services, Highway patrolmen, nursing homes, hospices, and restaurants on a request basis at a large discount, and has fully donated the product to many. The county sheriff\u2019s department has also been a key area they have donated to, ensuring they can protect themselves and those who are helping pass out meals to kids at Lafayette County school pickup locations. Wonderbird donated a large shipment of hand sanitizer to Dr. Rocky Ferrandino, Harlow\u2019s ENT friend in New York, as one of their first pushes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wonderbird Spirits now has its hand sanitizer available to the public on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wonderbirdspirits.com\/shop\">website <\/a>with 4 oz containers at $6 and 8 oz containers at $9. They are also offering a 10 percent discount on their gin, and both products are available for curbside pickup at their distillery or online shipment (sanitizer only). Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. <strong>William King<\/strong>, a radiologist at <strong>Radiology Associates of Oxford<\/strong>, reached out to the Dean of the <strong>Ole Miss Engineering Department<\/strong>, <strong>Dean Puleo<\/strong>. He inquired with a unique request: <em>could engineers help protect medical workers and create some personal protective equipment?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answering the call is the <strong>Center for Manufacturing Excellence (CME)<\/strong> and <strong>J.D. Williams Library IDEALab<\/strong> have come together to provide over 165 headband shields for Dr. King and his personnel so far, and have a goal of 400. The headbands are reusable and being created on a 3D printer in both the CME\u2019s facilities by <strong>Andy Gossett<\/strong>, <strong>Mark McAnally<\/strong>, and <strong>James McPhail<\/strong> and at the IDEALab by <strong>Christina Streeter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe teamwork had been incredible,\u201d said <strong>Scott Kilpatrick<\/strong>, Associate Director of the CME, \u201cI am moved by the effort of Andy Gossett. He has taken it on himself to really get this going, even coming up in the middle of the night to help get things going and be a point of contact throughout production.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Queen\u2019s Reward: Mead for Medics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just distilleries that have joined the effort in producing life-protecting sanitizers for the public. <strong>Queen\u2019s Reward<\/strong>, a meadery in Tupelo, Mississippi, has gone to extreme lengths to create hand sanitizers for the public to purchase and to donate to local groups in Tupelo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe got lucky,\u201d said <strong>Jeri Carter<\/strong>, owner of Queen\u2019s Reward. \u201cWe were able to get a hold of a still and a steamer from a seller who was sending it to an event that was canceled. On top of that, our permits for the production were able to be received in record-breaking time, less than a week. Which is unheard of. It typically takes a year or so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queen\u2019s Reward is run primarily by Jeri and her husband, along with a few other part time employees that help run tours, tastings, and the on-site bar, which is currently closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have made over 1,500 bottles so far of the sanitizer, with helpful reminders on the labeling such as, \u201cCough into your sleeve\u201d and \u201cKeep a Safe Distance!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-6003-1.jpg?resize=433%2C577\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-6003-1.jpg?w=433&amp;ssl=1 433w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IMG-6003-1.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>They are providing the 8 oz bottles for $9, or if you bring your own container, for $0.75 an ounce. \u201cWe are worried about making a huge profit, but we do have a lot of cost in this effort,\u201d said Carter. \u201cWe wish we could give it to everyone.\u201d And they are giving it to many\u2014including the box of 125 bottles waiting to be picked up by <strong>Tupelo Ambulance Services<\/strong> so that EMTs can keep clean while serving the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit Queen\u2019s Reward in Tupelo (don\u2019t forget to try a Mead Slushie, available for curbside pickup!), call 662-823-6323 visit <a href=\"https:\/\/queensreward.com\/\">online<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Help Yourself and Others: Hand Sanitizer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People across the country are banding together to help make facemasks and products to protect friends, loved ones, and strangers in the midst of the widespread pandemic. NOT recommended by WHO)<\/li><li>Spray bottle(s)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Recipe:<\/strong><br>I based the following recipe on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/gpsc\/5may\/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf\">recommendations by the WHO<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>12 oz 80\u2013100% Alcohol (Ethanol or Isopropyl)<\/li><li>2 teaspoons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pure-Vegetable-Derived-Glycerin-Noble-Roots\/dp\/B07KBDSBHY?ots=1&amp;slotNum=2&amp;imprToken=02b8bfbc-da7a-66de-cd3&amp;tag=w050b-20\">Glycerol or glycerin<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>1 tablespoons 3% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hydrogen-Peroxide-3-Vet-One\/dp\/B086DWW5L2?ots=1&amp;slotNum=4&amp;imprToken=02b8bfbc-da7a-66de-cd3&amp;tag=w050b-20\">Hydrogen peroxide<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>3 oz <a href=\"https:\/\/goto.walmart.com\/c\/1305164\/565706\/9383?veh=aff&amp;sourceid=imp_000011112222333344&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.walmart.com%2Fip%2FGreat-Value-Distilled-Water-1-Gallon%2F10315382\">Distilled water<\/a> (or you can boil and cool your own)<\/li><li>5 drops of essential oil per 2\u20134 oz container<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mix all ingredients in a glass or stainless steel container, preferably, then divide into individual spray containers. You can use it to wet a paper towel or dish towel for wiping down things. I keep one in my car for Kroger\/Larson\u2019s\/Walmart\/Bank trips.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><br>I wouldn\u2019t use wood for something like this . . . I don\u2019t even for making my sweet tea. No matter how many times I wash it, it still tastes like last night\u2019s spaghetti sauce. I used a take-out straw that was individually wrapped to \u201cstir\u201d so that I knew it was sterile and could easily toss it. I used my boyfriend\u2019s french coffee press as a \u201cbeaker\u201d to measure and mix all ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suggest sanitizing your tools and containers first with one of these methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boil glass\/steel spray bottles and utensils<\/li><li>Pour grain alcohol on all utensils and containers<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Glycerin\/Glycerol <\/strong>sounds odd, but is commonly used on the face and will keep the sanitizing solution from drying out your hands. I found some at CVS, but it&#8217;s also available on Amazon and any other pharmacy. Other emolents can be replaced, according to WHO, but I did not research others. If you can&#8217;t find glycerol, proceed with the rest of the recipe anyway and just remember to moisturize your hands after applying the sanitizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Divvy everything up into spray bottles you have \u201csanitized\u201d (as suggested above) and label your bottles so no one drinks them or otherwise uses them inappropriately.
