{"id":85137,"date":"2020-03-07T07:15:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-07T13:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=85137"},"modified":"2020-03-06T18:59:45","modified_gmt":"2020-03-07T00:59:45","slug":"ole-miss-vs-mississippi-state-basketball-preview-game-is-today-saturday-march-7-at-530-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-vs-mississippi-state-basketball-preview-game-is-today-saturday-march-7-at-530-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State Basketball Preview: Game is Today, Saturday, March 7 at 5:30 pm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a season where neither team looks like it\u2019s headed to the <strong>NCAA Tournament<\/strong>, barring an unlikely run to the <strong>SEC Tournament<\/strong> title, the regular-season finale between <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> (15-15, 6-11 SEC) and <strong>Mississippi State<\/strong> (19-11, 10-7 SEC) this Saturday (March 7<sup>th<\/sup>) at <strong>Humphrey Coliseum<\/strong> in <strong>Starkville <\/strong>has added meaning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bitter rivalry resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/recap?gameId=401166340\">comprehensive 83-58 win for Ole Miss<\/a> when they hosted <strong>Hail State<\/strong> back on February 11<sup>th<\/sup>. But the <strong>Bulldogs<\/strong> have gone an impressive 4-2 since then, while Ole Miss is 2-4. Indeed, the <strong>Rebels <\/strong>lost four straight immediately after their rivalry-game victory. Their only victories since that time came against <strong>Missouri <\/strong>(third-last in the SEC) and <strong>Vanderbilt <\/strong>(dead-last in the SEC).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Odds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The odds for the game favor the home Bulldogs by about 6.5 points, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbettingdime.com\/college-basketball\/odds\/\">according to the college basketball odds right here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"622\" height=\"565\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Breein-Tyree.jpg?resize=622%2C565\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Breein-Tyree.jpg?w=622&amp;ssl=1 622w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Breein-Tyree.jpg?resize=300%2C273&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><figcaption>Ole Miss guard  <strong>Breein Tyree<\/strong> dribbles against Mississippi State.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ole Miss<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidently, oddsmakers are not putting a lot of value on the first meeting between the teams, when Ole Miss guard <strong>Breein Tyree<\/strong> had arguably the game of his exceptional college career, dropping 40 points with five rebounds and four assists. He shot 13-22 from the field (59%) and his 10 of 11 free throws.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Breein-Tyree.png?resize=600%2C436\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-85144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Breein-Tyree.png?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Breein-Tyree.png?resize=300%2C218&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption> <strong>Breein Tyree<\/strong>. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyree\u2019s success against State goes back to his freshman season, when he dropped 24 on the Bulldogs in a thrilling 87-82 OT win in Starkville.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s evident that he\u2019ll need some help on Saturday. When he has to shoulder the entire offensive load, the Bulldogs tend to lose. When they beat Mississippi State earlier, <strong>Khadim Sy<\/strong> had 18 points while <strong>Devontae Shuler<\/strong> added 16.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Rebels\u2019 four consecutive losses after the February 11<sup>th<\/sup> meeting, Tyree averaged 23.0 PPG. Only once in those four games did a teammate have more than 16. (Shuler had 21 in a 103-78 rout at the hands of <strong>Alabama<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in the teams\u2019 two recent wins, Tyree has only scored 20 points combined, but he\u2019s averaged 4.0 assists (compared to just 2.6 for the season) and gotten significant contributions from all the starters. Their two losses since that time both came on the road, first to an up-and-town <strong>Aggies <\/strong>squad and, most recently, to a game <strong>South Carolina<\/strong> team. He\u2019s been a monster on the glass lately, averaging just over 11 rebounds per game in his last four (compared to 9.9 for the season).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Tyree, Perry has a decent amount of secondary scoring around him. The next three leading scorers on the team average 12.4 PPG, compared to just 10.7 on the Rebels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 19-11 on the year, Mississippi State still has an outside chance of an at-large big in the NCAA tournament. That said, they weren\u2019t even in the last four out in ESPN\u2019s latest bracket projections.
