{"id":84291,"date":"2020-02-12T13:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=84291"},"modified":"2020-02-12T10:55:30","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T16:55:30","slug":"overby-center-for-southern-journalism-and-politics-announces-spring-2020-calendar-shepard-smith-fake-news-politics-on-deck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/overby-center-for-southern-journalism-and-politics-announces-spring-2020-calendar-shepard-smith-fake-news-politics-on-deck\/","title":{"rendered":"Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics Announces Spring 2020 Calendar: Shepard Smith, Fake News, Politics on Deck"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics<\/strong>&#8216; spring lineup includes one of the first public appearances by <strong>Shepard Smith<\/strong> since he left his post as chief anchor at <strong>Fox News<\/strong> and managing editor of Fox&#8217;s breaking news division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His March 31 talk will be followed the next day by the presentation of the <strong>University of Mississippi<\/strong> <strong>School of Journalism and New Media<\/strong>&#8216;s prestigious Silver Em award, which will be given to Smith in honor of his notable journalism career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the exciting event calendar begins February 18, more than a month before Smith arrives on campus. <strong>Terry Mattingly<\/strong>, nationally syndicated region reporter, editor of the <strong>GetReligion<\/strong> blog and Overby fellow, and <strong>Richard Ostling<\/strong>, former chief religion writer for <strong>The Associated Press<\/strong>, will kick off the spring speaking calendar with a discussion on the intersection of religion and politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Terry-Mattingly.jpg?resize=500%2C682\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-84292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Terry-Mattingly.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Terry-Mattingly.jpg?resize=220%2C300&amp;ssl=1 220w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption>Overby fellow Terry Mattingly joins Richard Ostling, former chief religion writer for The Associated Press, to kick off the spring Overby Center programming with a February 18 discussion on the intersection of religion and politics. Submitted photo<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, award-winning filmmaker <strong>Tom Thurman<\/strong> will bring his compelling insight into the life of <em>All the King&#8217;s Men<\/em> author <strong>Robert Penn Warren<\/strong> to the Overby Center on Februrary 26, with his documentary <em>Robert Penn Warren: A Vision<\/em>. The film will be followed by a discussion between Thurman and journalism professor <strong>Joe Atkins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 4, <strong>Geneva Overholser<\/strong>, former editor of the <em>Des Moines Register<\/em> and industry writer and consultant, will discuss how journalists are helping or hindering the role of journalism in a democracy with <strong>Charles Overby<\/strong> and <strong>Greg Brock<\/strong>, an Overby fellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the Overby Center will welcome <strong>Robert Seidman<\/strong> on March 24 to discuss his documentary <em>Joseph Pulitzer: Voice of the People<\/em> and his warnings of fake news with Overby fellow <strong>Curtis Wilkie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The season will close with a look at <strong>Robert Kennedy<\/strong>&#8216;s 1966 visit to the <strong>Ole Miss School of Law<\/strong>, in which he revealed the deals former Mississippi Govenor <strong>Ross Barnett<\/strong> tried to cut to keep <strong>James Meredith<\/strong> out of the university.
