{"id":82127,"date":"2019-12-12T11:14:15","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T17:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=82127"},"modified":"2019-12-12T11:14:24","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T17:14:24","slug":"christmas-in-dixie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/christmas-in-dixie\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas in Dixie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>(it\u2019s never snowing in our pines!)<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I was not\nborn in <strong>Oxford<\/strong>, but instead grew up\nlistening to the <em>TIME Life Treasury of\nChristmas<\/em> collection of CDs on the way to Oxford Christmas festivities with\nmy Tettleton and McDaniel sides of the family. They were sticky with Coca-Cola\nand Skittles from years of wear and tear. I use to think it was so much colder\nup here in Oxford, that Oxford got so much more snow that Hattiesburg and\nMeridian (my homes before relocating here), but I\u2019ve learned now that\u2019s not\nnecessarily true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, I have built my own playlist of songs that help me celebrate Christmas on Spotify, and can actually find those original old albums on there too. I\u2019ve also learned that while traditions are great, trying new activities is really my cup of tea. Oxford is certainly filled with a plethora of holiday options to fill your calendar\u2014kudos to anyone who tries to hit everything this December!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the Christmas Traditionalist<\/strong><br>Taking your kids to get photos with Santa is an age old tradition, and <strong>Visit Oxford<\/strong> doesn\u2019t want the kids of Oxford to miss out just because we don\u2019t have a mall! They host two more \u201cSanta visits\u201d at Visit Oxford:  December 14  from 2\u20134 pm and December 21\u00a0 from 10 am\u2013noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"960\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Santa-at-Visit-Oxford.jpg?resize=640%2C960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-82128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Santa-at-Visit-Oxford.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Santa-at-Visit-Oxford.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jumping on the same sleigh,the Saturday Santa sightings continue with <strong>Yoknapatawpha Arts Council<\/strong> and<strong> Chick-fil-A<\/strong>\u2019s annual<strong> Breakfast with Santa <\/strong>at <strong>The Powerhouse<\/strong> from 8\u20139:15 am and 9:45\u201311 am on December 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, the <strong>Ford Center\u2019s Holiday Village <\/strong>with the 10th Annual <strong>Gingerbread Village<\/strong> is happening now until December 18. The Village features the Miniature Christmas Village display and a section celebrating other December holiday traditions. There will also be a visit from Santa and scheduled story times with special guest readers. The Holiday Village supports local food banks. Visitors to the Village are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate. The Village will be open daily. Group visits to the Village may be scheduled on weekdays, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. To schedule a group visit, call 662-915-6502 or email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:kmeacham@olemiss.edu\">kmeacham@olemiss.edu<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If caroling is more your style, venture out to the scenic <strong>Plein Air<\/strong> in <strong>Taylor<\/strong> for <strong>Carols in the Chapel<\/strong> on Sunday, December 15 from 5\u20136 pm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the Arts<\/strong><br>The Yoknapatawpha Arts Council (YAC) yearly host many different exhibits and educational arts events for people of all ages. This year, YAC is hosting two art events, including <strong>Santa\u2019s Elves Workshop<\/strong> on December 23 and <strong>Winter Wonderland Art Camp<\/strong> on January 2 and 3, all at The Powerhouse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YAC also\nhosts one of my favorite events of the year\u2014The <strong>Holiday Ornament Auction<\/strong> on December 13 from 6\u20139 pm\u2014which is much\nmore than it sounds. Free for all active YAC members, the evening includes a\nsilent auction style exhibit of ornaments made by local artists on display,\npaired with tasting booths from local restaurants and caterers. There is also a\nfeatured <strong>Jere Allen<\/strong> piece this year,\nwith separate tickets that can be purchased in advance. Throw in some&nbsp; live music and photos with Santa, and this\nmakes for a great one-stop holiday event!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An exciting new YAC event is the <strong>Lucky Finds Market<\/strong> on December 14 from 10am\u20136pm at the new <strong>Lafayette County Multi-purpose Arena<\/strong>. Vendors can purchase a booth for only $10 to share their antiques, cottage goods, and handmade items, or offer a single item for sale at the<strong> Lucky Finds Consignment Booth<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For those Looking for Something Different<\/strong><br><strong>nowAWAKEnow<\/strong> with <strong>Susannah Furr<\/strong> is holding an exciting experience called <strong>Winter Solstice Sound Alchemy <\/strong>to welcome the return of the light on the shortest day of the year at the beginning of the <strong>Winter Solstice<\/strong>. Susannah plays the crystal singing bowls while leading a guided meditative journey, resulting in an extraordinary state of relaxation, clarity, and peace.The event will be held on December 21 from 6:30\u20138 pm at<strong> Southern Star Yoga<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fordcenter.org\/files\/2017\/10\/IMG_1193.png?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"\/><figcaption>The Gingerbread Village at the Ford Center is on display now through December 18.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For the Libations<\/strong><br>On Tuesday, December 17, <strong>City Grocery <\/strong>and <strong>Wonderbird Spirits <\/strong>are throwing a <strong>Tacky Sweater Christmas Party<\/strong>, featuring <strong>David Swider<\/strong> from the <strong>End of All Music<\/strong> playing the tunes from 7:30 till 11:30 pm at the upstairs bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless\nof how you choose to celebrate the season, take time to slow down and enjoy the\nfamily and friends who mean the most to you.
