Lunchtime music series in Bryant Hall continues with Nave Graham<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The next performance in the First Tuesdays in Bryant Hall Noontime Music Series<\/strong> features flutist and new University of Mississippi<\/strong> instructor of music Nave Graham<\/strong> on December 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graham will play three pieces for flute and electronics. One of the pieces is Eve Beglarian<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cI Will Not Be Sad in This World\u201d and features the alto flute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s based on a gorgeous song by Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova,\u201d Graham said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c’Arcana,’ by Elizabeth Brown, is titled and inspired by the definition of arcanum,\u201d he said. \u201cA deep secret or mystery, specialized knowledge that is mysterious to the average person, or a secret essence or remedy\u2014an elixir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last on Graham\u2019s short program is Caleb Burhans<\/strong>\u2019 \u201cA Moment for Elliott Smith,\u201d a tribute to the ’90s singer-songwriter of the same name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll three pieces are written for flute and fixed-format electronics, or tape,\u201d Graham said. \u201cAll three composers are living, and I\u2019m especially excited to be featuring two pieces by female composers, one of whom is a woman of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m passionate about playing music by underrepresented persons, so I have made a goal to include at least one piece by a female composer on each program I present this year. In this case, I get to do two!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Tuesdays music series is presented by the UM Department of Music<\/strong>. Each performance takes place 12:15\u20131 pm on the first Tuesday of the month. Held in the atrium and commons at Bryant Hall<\/strong>, on the Circle, the series gives musicians and audiences a chance to experience music performance in a more intimate setting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFirst Tuesdays are a great way for people to see what music is interesting to our faculty and to enjoy the music in a lovely, comfortable setting,\u201d said Michael Rowlett<\/strong>, UM associate professor of music and an organizer of the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
