Over the years, the city has been home to Latin pop royalty and ascendant Soundcloud rappers; played host to bass-booming EDM fests, and the golden years of disco legends. It\u2019s also why Miami\u2019s latest genre-defying dynamos, <strong>Magic City Hippies<\/strong>, are primed to take their infectious indie-funk around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always out to entertain people,\u201d promises singer-guitarist <strong>Robby Hunter<\/strong>. \u201cMiami is a nightlife city,\u201d he adds with a tinge of excitement. \u201cPeople are oriented towards staying out all night. Anything you do has to make them dance.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8eo-73037xY\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>As Magic City Hippies approach the Aug. 16 release of their standout debut album <strong><em>Modern Animal<\/em><\/strong>\u2014a mosaic of poolside grooves and lingering, sun-kissed melodies\u2014the trio\u2019s origin story remains central to its crowd-pleasing mission statement. First it was just <strong>Hunter<\/strong>\u2014hustling the Miami streets, plugging his guitar and looping pedals into whatever power source he could find. Sometimes crowds formed; sometimes others joined in. On a good night, he\u2019d maybe earn a hundred bucks. The next stop was Barracuda Bar &amp; Grill, a popular Coconut Grove dive where Hunter became a regular performer and forged a sublime chemistry with the rest of Magic City Hippies\u2019 present day lineup: guitarist <strong>John Coughlin<\/strong> and drummer-producer <strong>Pat Howard<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They began playing \u201890s rock and hip-hop covers to weekend warriors and college crowd regulars, before live-testing their first original tracks in 2011. \u201cThere was something special when we played those sets,\u201d Howard remembers. \u201cWe\u2019d go for four hours, not even rehearsing. Then Robby came to the table with some originals.\u201d The easygoing psych-rap nugget \u201cCorazon,\u201d released when they were still called Robby Hunter Band, shot to No. 1 on the Hype Machine in 2013; after shifting to Magic City Hippies, \u201cFanfare,\u201d the swaggering opening track off 2015\u2019s <strong><em>Hippie Castle<\/em><\/strong> EP, topped Spotify\u2019s Global Viral 50 chart, thanks to a burgeoning online fanbase. With brothers <strong>Ferny<\/strong> (keyboard) and <strong>Guillermo Belisario<\/strong> (bass) added to a now-indomitable live lineup, Magic City Hippies embarked on extensive tours supporting bands like <strong>Hippo Campus<\/strong> and <strong>Moon Taxi<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowds doubled and tripled, confidence soared.
