(TLV) \u2013 July 16 of this year was a sad day\u2014<strong>James \u201cT-Model\u201d Ford<\/strong> passed away at his home in Greenville, Mississippi.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">He was born <strong>James Lewis Carter Ford<\/strong> in Forrest, Mississippi, between 1921 and 1925, making him around 90 when he passed. He told Tyler Keith a few years ago, \u201cMy mama had me on a ditch bank, and that\u2019s where I was born\u201d (hence the song title \u201cI Was Born In A Swamp\u201d).<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">T-Model was one-of-a-kind, real-deal Blues legend who played from his heart, played what he knew. He played and sang and won hearts regularly around the Delta, elsewhere in Mississippi, and even internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The first time<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/T-Model-and-Sign.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7764\" alt=\"T-Model and Sign\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/T-Model-and-Sign.jpg?resize=300%2C400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/T-Model-and-Sign.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/T-Model-and-Sign.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> I saw T-Model he pretended to hit me with his cane. I had just come back to Mississippi to live in my hometown of Greenwood, and there happened to be a Blues festival in the park that weekend. When I saw T-Model walk to the edge of the stage to peer at the audience while another band, his presence struck me and I knew I had to have a picture of him. So I crept closer to the stage with my camera and he pretended to bop me on the head; people in the audience chuckled.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A few months later, I was dating a Blues musician who lived in Leland, and he had a weekly gig at Walnut Street Blues Bar in Greenville. I ended up coming to town and watching him play most weeks; when he and I would take a \u201cset break\u201d together, T-Model usually asked if he could sit in for a little while. Turns out, once you told T-Model to play it was hard to get him off the stage; besides, nobody actually wanted him off the stage. I remember hearing him yell into the mic, \u201cIt\u2019s Jack Daniels time!\u201d more times than I can count. I remember the first time he told me to fetch him his moonshine from his car (which, by the way, wasn\u2019t even a Ford), and told me, \u201cTake a pull for yourself, now, baby.\u201d He always called me baby.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModel1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7765\" alt=\"TModel1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModel1.jpg?resize=500%2C350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModel1.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModel1.jpg?resize=300%2C210&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>He always called every pretty woman \u201cbaby.\u201d Or \u201csugar,\u201d or some such sweet word. He was \u201cThe Ladies\u2019 Man,\u201d after all. But he loved his wife, Miss Stella, dearly. And he was \u201cThe Tale Dragger\u201d\u2014his guitar even had black and gold stickers on it telling us so, right below his name. I\u2019m not sure how he got the moniker \u201cTale Dragger,\u201d but I remember hearing some ridiculous stories (and some of the damnedest phrases) come out of his mouth, so that probably had something to do with it.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">When Tyler interviewed him a few years ago he said the name \u201cT-Model\u201d came from a boss he had when he was working at a logging job in Forrest.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">James T-Model Ford lived a full life\u2014maybe not the happiest, but full. He worked in the fields and in a sawmill and as a truck driver when he was much younger. He was then sentenced to ten years on a chain-gang for murder (though he said he only served two). About that stint Ford later said, \u201cI could really stomp some ass back then, stomp it good. I was a-sure-enough-dangerous man.\u201d He was apparently still dangerous in 2010 when he named a song on The Ladies Man \u201cI\u2019m Coming To Kick Yer Asses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">His thi<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModelFuneralArrangements-1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"340\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7766\" alt=\"TModelFuneralArrangements-1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModelFuneralArrangements-1.jpg?resize=340%2C400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModelFuneralArrangements-1.jpg?w=340&amp;ssl=1 340w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/TModelFuneralArrangements-1.jpg?resize=255%2C300&amp;ssl=1 255w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a>rd wife bought him a guitar and an amp for fifty dollars one day on a whim (before she left him). He couldn\u2019t read music or tabs, but he taught himself how to play guitar well, imitating Muddy Waters and Howlin\u2019 Wolf at first but developing his own unmistakable sound after a while.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">T-Model had a pacemaker installed in 2008, then suffered his first stroke in 2010. He continued to play as long as he could, but his second stroke (in 2012) debilitated him even further and he only played a handful of gigs after that.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">He passed away peacefully at his home on a Tuesday morning. Unfortunately it seems that none of us lives forever, not even the greats. It\u2019s still \u201cJack Daniels time\u201d in our hearts and in heaven, T-Model. And we\u2019ll remember that even though you aren\u2019t with us anymore,<strong> \u201cEverything\u2019s Gonna Be Alright.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>This article was originally published in The Local Voice #184, on July 18, 2013.
