{"id":77594,"date":"2019-07-10T11:48:15","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T16:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=77594"},"modified":"2019-07-10T11:48:17","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T16:48:17","slug":"southside-gallery-celebrating-40-years-of-square-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/southside-gallery-celebrating-40-years-of-square-books\/","title":{"rendered":"Southside Gallery: Celebrating 40 Years of Square Books"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> <strong>Reception: Thursday, July 11, 5\u20138 pm.&nbsp;<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Southside Gallery<\/strong> is pleased to announce a July exhibition, <strong>&#8220;Celebrating 40 years of Square Books.\u201d<\/strong> The exhibition, an installation of rare vintage and collectible book posters curated by <strong>Square Books<\/strong> owner <strong>Richard Howorth<\/strong>, will be on display July 9\u2013August 3.&nbsp;A reception is scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 5\u20138 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the posters in the exhibition are for sale and once were displayed in Square Books.\u00a0 Howorth carefully selected the posters for the installation in hopes of curating an exhibition that will appeal to local collectors.\u00a0 His insight into his customers\u2019 favorite writers and books also factored in to which posters were selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Square-Books-40-year-poster.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-77607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Square-Books-40-year-poster.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Square-Books-40-year-poster.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSquare Books is delighted to partner with <strong>Wil Cook<\/strong> and <strong>Southside Gallery<\/strong>, an important, highly relevant institution in Oxford\u2019s cultural structure and history, in what we think will be a fun trip down memory lane\u2014a blast of amazing artwork that has been deployed to promote books and writers here over the past 40 years,&#8221; said Howorth. &#8220;Some people will see something they might want to take home, and we are looking forward to a fun time!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an unconventional exhibition for Southside, as the gallery emphasizes original art, but the idea of a book poster installation to celebrate one of the most iconic bookstores in the country intrigued Wil Cook, director of Southside Gallery.&nbsp; \u201cRichard presented the idea of an installation of hundreds of book posters displayed to form this, sort of, poster collage and I couldn\u2019t pass that up,\u201d Cook says of the show.&nbsp; \u201cIt will be a show unlike any we\u2019ve ever had.&nbsp;
