\"\"Oxford, Miss. (TLV) \u2013 On Saturday, March 24th<\/strong>, the men of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia<\/strong>\u2014a music fraternity at Ole Miss\u2014will be hosting a Battle of the Bands at The Blind Pig<\/strong>. The event will feature five local bands for the chance to win a cash prize and an additional gig at The Blind Pig.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the fraternity\u2019s mission is the advancement of music in America,\u201d said Shane Turner<\/strong>, the fraternity\u2019s current president. \u201cOur goal is to achieve this on the local level by showcasing just a few of the bands that Oxford\u2019s unique music scene has to offer. We also thought this would be a very accessible way to interact with the community and build awareness of our organization so that we may continue our mission in every aspect of music and music education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oxford locals and fans of the participating bands are strongly encouraged to come participate, as crowd response will be an essential part of the judge\u2019s scores. And with genres ranging from Blues to Metal, Jazz to \u201cSoda Pop,\u201d there\u2019s a little bit of everything for everyone to enjoy.<\/p>\n

Scheduled to perform are local talents Jacob & the Old Guys<\/strong>, Bill Perry Band<\/strong>, The Red Thangs<\/strong>, Handling the Exception<\/strong>, and Faulkner Alley<\/strong>, the majority of which are fairly new to the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought featuring younger groups better coincided with our mission of music advancement,\u201d says Turner.<\/p>\n

Each band will be judged on their creativity, musicianship, and stage presence.\u00a0 Judges will include Dr. Michael Worthy<\/strong>, the director of the Mississippians Jazz Ensemble, Brodee Scott<\/strong>, DJ of 109.1 Radio Now in Memphis, and The Local Voice<\/em>\u2019s own Newt Rayburn<\/strong>.
\nThere is no cover charge, but donations to the organization are encouraged. Participating patrons will be entered into a raffle and the winner will take home a prize at the conclusion of the evening. T-shirts will also be available for sale for $15.<\/p>\n
