Burroughs<\/strong> and starring <strong>Bill Paxton<\/strong> that was made in the late\n70s\/early 80s and recently updated by Huckabee. Another announcement confirms\nthat <strong>Steve Young<\/strong>, the subject of <strong>Dava Whisenant<\/strong>\u2019s award-winning\ndocumentary <strong><em>Bathtubs over Broadway<\/em><\/strong>, is now slated to attend the screening\nof that film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the\nprogramming announcements, Oxford Film Festival\u2019s Executive Director <strong>Melanie Addington<\/strong> said, \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled\nto have Tom Huckabee return to Oxford with a true film rarity, his fascinating\nfilm, <em>Taking Tiger Mountain Revisited<\/em>.\nOffering special one-of-a-kind moments in film like that, as well as being able\nto put forward the best locally made projects, celebrating our homegrown talent\nis one of the things that make this film festival great. Having Steve Young\nhere for <em>Bathtubs Over Broadway<\/em>, one\nof the most crowd-pleasing films from the past year, and being able to offer\nfilmmaker panels offering an insider\u2019s view into the making of film and\nsustaining a career in the industry fully rounds out the five-day film festival\nexperience we pride ourselves in offering, when combined with our galas and\ncompetition selections. This will be an exciting and entertaining five days in\nFebruary and those who consider themselves true film fans will not want to miss\na single moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Bill-Paxton.jpg?resize=640%2C298\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67101\"\/><figcaption><strong>Bill Paxton<\/strong> in<em> Taking Tiger Mountain Revisited<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>First released in 1983, <em>Taking\nTiger Mountain Revisited<\/em> was directed by Huckabee and Smith, and included\nBill Paxton as an integral creative partner on the project. Set in a dystopian future, American draft\ndodger Billy Hampton (played by Paxton), is brainwashed and programmed by\nmilitant feminists to assassinate the Welsh minister of prostitution. Lurching\nunwittingly toward his goal, he makes a series of furtive connections with\noutsiders like himself, including a feral child, a gentle prostitute, a\nsadomasochistic delinquent, a lovelorn androgyne, a hippie dope dealer, and a\nmute nymphomaniac, while at the same time fending off predators who would sell\nhim into sex slavery. Eventually, he is forced to focus on his mission and face\nthe dreadful dilemma tormenting his psyche: to kill or not to kill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally shot in Wales, the film was revisited in\n2016 by Huckabee to incorporate the spirit and flavor of the \u201cmaking of\u201d\naspects of the film, which included the influence of William S. Burroughs, who\nshares a screenwriting credit on the film with Huckabee, Smith, and <strong>Paul Cullum<\/strong>. <em>Taking Tiger Mountain\nRevisited<\/em> will screen on Sunday, February 10 at 12:45 pm at the <strong>Malco Oxford Commons<\/strong> (206 Commonwealth Blvd) and will include a Q&amp;A\nwith Huckabee, who returns to the Oxford Film Festival for the first time since\nhis film <strong><em>Carried Away<\/em><\/strong> was an\naudience favorite in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Bathtubs-Broadway.jpg?resize=321%2C314\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67102\" width=\"321\" height=\"314\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously\nannounced, Whisenant\u2019s <em>Bathtubs\nover Broadway<\/em> gives a funny and informative look at the history and phenomenon\nof industrial musicals courtesy of Steve Young, a longtime writer for <strong><em>Late\nNight with David Letterman<\/em><\/strong>. What began as a curiosity to Young became a\nloving obsession as he unearthed the under-the-radar history of the industrial\nmusical form in this country. Whisenant\u2019s film delivers a funny and touching\ntribute to the artists that created the musicals, as well as Young\u2019s journey to\nshine a light on them. The film screens at the Malco on Saturday, February 9, at 4 pm with\nYoung slated to be on hand for a Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\naddition to the above events, Saturday, February 9 will feature three special\nshort film programs, led by a Family Film Festival featuring <strong>Dan Chuba<\/strong>\u2019s <strong><em>The Boxcar Children: Surprise\nIsland<\/em><\/strong>, based on the second book of the Boxcar Children series, a short\nfilm program, and a feature and acting workshop presented at the <strong>Oxford Conference Center<\/strong> (102 Ed Perry\nBlvd). For only $10, the film program is a great introduction to the Oxford\nFilm Festival for younger family members and perennially one of the most\npopular film presentations due to the family-friendly nature of the films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The UM Film &amp; Theatre\nShorts<\/strong> program will highlight some\nof the best work to come out of the <strong>University\nof Mississippi<\/strong> this past year and highlights alumni, faculty, and\ncompetitions from the fall. The new partnership was set this year to help\nlaunch the new film major in the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nare so excited to see the growth of filmmaking in the area due to the new\nmajor,\u201d Addington said. \u201cThe minor made an impact on the film community already\nand to now have both is very exciting and bodes well for the future of Oxford\nas a film town.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"248\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Funky-Butt.jpg?resize=640%2C248\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67103\"\/><figcaption>Funky Butt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nshort film program presenting the best of last year\u2019s <strong>Louisiana Film Prize<\/strong> and <strong>Memphis\nFilm Prize<\/strong> competitions continues a special partnership between those\none-of-a-kind film competitions and the Oxford Film Festival to screen the top\nprize-winners for Mississippi audiences. Highlights of this year\u2019s lineup will\nbe <strong>Jonnie Stapleton<\/strong>\u2019s film <strong><em>Funky\nButt<\/em><\/strong>, which took home the Louisiana Film Prize\u2019s $50,000 grand prize,\nand <strong>Kevin Brooks<\/strong>\u2019 film <strong><em>Last\nDay<\/em><\/strong>, which won the Memphis Film Prize contest and $10,000.
