{"id":6135,"date":"2013-03-24T23:36:22","date_gmt":"2013-03-25T04:36:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=6135"},"modified":"2013-03-24T23:36:22","modified_gmt":"2013-03-25T04:36:22","slug":"wilma-mccarver-gray-hooker-october-5-1921-march-22-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wilma-mccarver-gray-hooker-october-5-1921-march-22-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilma McCarver Gray Hooker: October 5, 1921-March 22, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1983-04-Mema-copy.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6136 alignright\" alt=\"1983-04-Mema copy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1983-04-Mema-copy.jpg?resize=343%2C437\" width=\"343\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1983-04-Mema-copy.jpg?w=951&amp;ssl=1 951w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1983-04-Mema-copy.jpg?resize=801%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 801w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><\/a>Wilma McCarver Gray Hooker<\/strong>, daughter of the late <strong>Gus Whitlow Gray<\/strong> and <strong>Keron McCarver Gray<\/strong>, passed away March 22, 2013, in West Point, Mississippi.\u00a0 She was born October 5, 1921, on a farm in Pontotoc County, Mississippi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">In 1939, Wilma Gray graduated from high school in Ecru, Mississippi, where she was chosen Most Beautiful.\u00a0 She married<strong> Aron Haywood Hooker<\/strong> of Thaxton, Mississippi, on June 10, 1939, and they were married for over 38 years, only being separated by his service during World War II.\u00a0 \u00a0They shared a love for their church, their family, and their friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Mrs. Hooker was a tireless, fun, generous, involved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.\u00a0 Her time and talents were always devoted to the activities of her family. She loved to spend her time cooking and gardening, and she will be remembered as one who always warmly welcomed family and friends to her home. Mrs. Hooker affectionately became known as <strong>Mema<\/strong> when she became a grandmother. She had a gift for making each of her children, grandchildren, and great\u2013grandchildren believe that they were her favorite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">She was an active member of First Baptist Church of West Point working with Girls\u2019 Auxiliary, Baptist Training Union, and Vacation Bible School. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The sentiments of her grandchildren were best expressed as one wrote, \u201cOur beloved Mema passed away, and although we are really sad and already miss her dearly, it\u2019s comforting to know she lived a long, full life, filled with joy, hope, love, and family.\u00a0 Mema is reunited with our <strong>Pepa<\/strong>, and for that we rejoice.\u00a0 We will always cherish the good times we had with her, and we are so thankful for the many wonderful years we shared together.\u00a0 No matter where we go and no matter what we do, Mema will always be with us, for we are Mema\u2019s children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Mrs. Hooker is survived by her children <strong>Dr. Phillip Aron Hooker<\/strong> and wife, <strong>Carol<\/strong> of West Point, <strong>Elizabeth Gray Hooker Herron<\/strong> and husband, <strong>Charles<\/strong> of Meridian, MS, and <strong>Wilma Jane Hooker Maxwell<\/strong> of Germantown, TN.\u00a0\u00a0 She is also survived by grandchildren, <strong>Dr. Phillip Aron Hooker, Jr.<\/strong> and wife, <strong>Miranda<\/strong>, of Oxford, MS, <strong>Andrew Haywood Hooker<\/strong> of Franklin, TN, <strong>Shelley Grace Hooker Hemphill<\/strong> of Thompson\u2019s Station, TN, <strong>Andrew Newton Rayburn<\/strong> of Oxford, MS, <strong>Thomas McCarver Rayburn<\/strong> of Jackson, MS, <strong>Shelby Hooker Rayburn<\/strong> of Oxford, MS, <strong>Suzanne Patton Herron Helveston<\/strong> and husband, <strong>Campbell<\/strong> of Meridian, MS, <strong>Elizabeth Ann Herron<\/strong> of Birmingham, AL,<strong> Elizabeth Drayton Maxwell Hutton<\/strong> of St. Louis, MO, and <strong>Katherine Gray Maxwell<\/strong> of Chicago, IL,\u00a0 and great-grandchildren, <strong>Preston<\/strong> and<strong> Anna Hooker<\/strong>, <strong>Robert Hemphill, Jr.<\/strong>, <strong>Hart Rayburn<\/strong>, <strong>Patton<\/strong> and<strong> Collins Helveston<\/strong>, and <strong>Hannah, Abby<\/strong>, and<strong> Marie Hutton<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Preceding her in death were her husband, Aron Haywood Hooker, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Whitlow Gray, sisters<strong> Hilda Gray Tedford<\/strong>, <strong>Joyce Gray Baker<\/strong>, <strong>Betty Jean Gray<\/strong>, <strong>Jamie Keron Gray<\/strong> and brothers <strong>Harvey Gray<\/strong> and her twin <strong>William Gray<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The visitation will be Monday, March 25, 2013, from 4:00-6:00 pm at Calvert Funeral Home in West Point, MS.\u00a0 Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in West Point with burial in West Point Memorial Garden Cemetery.\u00a0 Pallbearers will be the grandsons and great-grandsons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Memorials may be made to First
