{"id":50059,"date":"2018-11-20T08:00:47","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T14:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=50059"},"modified":"2018-11-19T21:51:45","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T03:51:45","slug":"ole-miss-football-legend-kayo-dottley-passes-away-at-age-90-in-vicksburg-mississippi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/ole-miss-football-legend-kayo-dottley-passes-away-at-age-90-in-vicksburg-mississippi\/","title":{"rendered":"Ole Miss Football Legend Kayo Dottley Passes Away at age 90 in Vicksburg, Mississippi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vicksburgpost.com\/2018\/11\/18\/ole-miss-football-legend-longtime-vicksburg-resident-kayo-dottley-dies-at-age-90\/\"><em>The Vicksburg Post<\/em><\/a>, <strong>John Albert \u201cKayo\u201d Dottley Sr.<\/strong>, a longtime <strong>Vicksburg<\/strong> resident and one of the greatest football players in <strong>Ole Miss<\/strong> history, died on Saturday at the age of 90.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley is a member of seven different sports halls of fame, including both the <strong>Mississippi<\/strong> and <strong>Arkansas<\/strong> state halls and the <strong>Ole Miss Hall of Fame<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley was born in <strong>Birmingham, Alabama<\/strong>, raised in <strong>McGehee<\/strong>, Arkansas, and had lived in Vicksburg for more than 65 years. On his way to the River City, Dottley became an Ole Miss legend.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kayo-dottley.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"530\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50060 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kayo-dottley.jpg?resize=640%2C530\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">He was a two-time All-Southeastern Conference running back and led the nation in rushing with 1,312 yards in 1949. It stood as an SEC single-season record until 1971, and still stands as the Ole Miss record. His 14 rushing touchdowns that season also are tied for the school\u2019s single-season record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley is the only player in Ole Miss history with more than one 200-yard rushing game \u2014 he had three, all in the 1949 season \u2014 and still ranks third on the school\u2019s career rushing yardage list with 2,654.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley had two 1,000-yard seasons in 1949 and 1950. Until <strong>Deuce McAllister<\/strong> did it in 1998, he was the only Ole Miss player to ever do it even once. Five players have done it since McAllister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cWhen I led the nation in rushing in 1949, I didn\u2019t know it and Ole Miss didn\u2019t know it. It wasn\u2019t like it is now,\u201d Dottley said in a 2009 interview. \u201cI\u2019m still amazed that all the great backs we had, playing 11 games, none of them made 1,000 yards.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley was as tough a player as he was fast. He broke his left arm twice and his right arm once in high school but never missed a game. He broke his foot playing baseball the week before playing Tennessee in 1946, but gutted it out and still ran for 100 yards against one of the best defenses of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In a 2009 interview with <em>The Vicksburg Post<\/em>. Dottley joked that a fear of legendary coach <strong>John Vaught<\/strong> inspired him to play more than any desire.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/olemiss-dotley.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"598\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50061 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/olemiss-dotley.jpg?resize=600%2C598\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cHe said if you can\u2019t play you don\u2019t need to be here,\u201d Dottley said. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how quick my foot got well when they were going to ship my butt home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In addition to his football exploits, Dottley was a member of <strong>Kappa Sigma Fraternity<\/strong>, the Ole Miss Hall of Fame, and <strong>Omicron Delta Kappa<\/strong>. He was Freshman King and elected <strong>Colonel Rebel<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After his stellar college football career, Dottley was selected in the second round of the 1951 NFL draft by the <strong>Chicago Bears<\/strong>. Dottley ran for 670 yards in his first season, earning the rookie of the year award and a Pro Bowl bid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley retired and moved to Vicksburg with his wife <strong>Nina Mae Nosser<\/strong>, a Vicksburg native. The two had met at Ole Miss when she was a cheerleader and he the football star. The couple was married for 64 years. They have three children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley earned his masters degree from Ole Miss in only four years, and upon moving to Vicksburg he became owner of a <strong>Jitney Jungle<\/strong> supermarket. He also worked with his father to found <strong>Dottley\u2019s Spice<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Dottley coached youth football and the <strong>Bowmar Bears<\/strong> for many years, making a lasting impact on many young men in Vicksburg. He was also an avid golfer who won the Vicksburg Country Club championship several times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Funeral services for Dottley will be held on Tuesday, November 20, at 2 pm at <strong>First Baptist Church<\/strong> with <strong>Dr. Matt Buckles<\/strong> officiating. Burial will follow in <strong>Cedar Hill Cemetery<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Visitation will be Monday, November 19, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm at <strong>Glenwood Funeral Home<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Memorials may be made to Blair E.
