The University of Mississippi Museum<\/strong> and Historic Houses <\/strong>unveils its 18th annual\u00a0<\/span>holiday keepsake ornament celebrating one of Ole Miss<\/strong>\u2019 most beautiful spaces and time-honored\u00a0<\/span>traditions\u2014The Grove<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 10-acre green space in the center of the Ole Miss campus, officially named The Grove in 1935, was\u00a0<\/span>first envisioned and implemented by Robert Burwell<\/strong> Fulton,<\/strong> UM chancellor from 1892 to 1906. When the\u00a0<\/span>University was building its first library in 1889, now Ventress<\/strong> Hall,<\/strong> Fulton extended the campus west,\u00a0<\/span>outside of the \u201cinner circle,\u201d toward the train depot and planted trees and shrubs to add natural beauty to\u00a0<\/span>the campus. <\/span><\/p>\n

During his time as chancellor, Fulton worked to grow and preserve the lush landscape.\u00a0<\/span>In the 1950s, under the coaching of John Vaught<\/strong>, the Grove began to transform into the tailgate mecca it is\u00a0<\/span>today. Students moved their pregame festivities from the sorority and fraternity houses to a more\u00a0<\/span>centralized location on campus. Fans parked cars, trucks, buses, and RVs under the trees on game days\u00a0<\/span>until a massive rainstorm in 1991 forced the University to ban vehicles in the Grove completely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, the Grove is more than just one of the country\u2019s best football tailgates. The Grove hosts\u00a0<\/span>community events year-round, including the annual Summer Sunset Concert Series<\/strong>, and is the main\u00a0<\/span>venue for the University\u2019s annual commencement ceremonies.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Grove commemorative ornament is available for $25 in the Museum Store. Collectible ornaments\u00a0<\/span>from previous years, which are still available, include the Old Skipwith House<\/strong>, Brandt Memory House<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span>Ventress Hall, the Lafayette County Courthouse<\/strong>, Oxford City Hall<\/strong>, the Ole Miss Women\u2019s Basketball Jersey<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span>the Theora Hamblett House<\/strong>, Theora Hamblett\u2019s Christmas Trees,<\/strong> the Walk of Champions<\/strong>, Oxford\u2019s Double<\/strong><\/span>
\nDecker Bus<\/strong>, the Herakles Neck Amphora<\/strong>, and the Barlow\u2019s Planetarium<\/strong>. Previous years\u2019 ornaments are\u00a0<\/span>$20 each.<\/span><\/p>\n

The keepsake ornaments can be purchased in the Museum Store or by phone at 662-915-7073. Shipping\u00a0<\/span>within the continental US is available for $7. All shipped orders must be placed by December 10 if\u00a0<\/span>needed by the holiday. All sales are final.\u00a0<\/span>Museum members and Friends of the Museum receive a 10 percent discount on all merchandise in the\u00a0<\/span>Museum Store.
