{"id":48740,"date":"2018-10-03T16:20:02","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T22:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/?p=48740"},"modified":"2018-10-03T16:28:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T22:28:15","slug":"join-poet-julian-randall-at-off-square-books-as-he-reads-from-his-new-collection-refuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thelocalvoice.net\/oxford\/join-poet-julian-randall-at-off-square-books-as-he-reads-from-his-new-collection-refuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Join Poet Julian Randall at Off Square Books as He Reads from His New Collection, &#8220;Refuse&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16pt;\">Event will take place Wednesday, October 10 at Off Square Books at 5 pm<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Set against the backdrop of the Obama presidency, Julian Randall&#8217;s\u00a0<i><strong>Refuse<\/strong>\u00a0<\/i>documents a young biracial man&#8217;s journey through the mythos of Blackness, Latinidad, family, sexuality, and a hostile American landscape.\u00a0Mapping the relationship between father and son caught in a lineage of grief and inherited Black trauma, Randall conjures reflections from mythical figures such as Icarus, Narcissus, and the absent Frank Ocean.\u00a0Not merely a story of the wound but the salve,\u00a0<i>Refuse<\/i>\u00a0 is a poetry debut that accepts that every song must end before walking confidently into the next music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Julian Randall<\/strong>\u00a0is a <strong>Living Queer Black<\/strong> poet from Chicago. A <strong>Pushcart Prize<\/strong> nominee, he has received fellowships from Callaloo, BOAAT, and the Watering Hole and was the 2015 National College Slam (CUPSI) Best Poet. Julian is the curator of Winter Tangerine Review\u2019s Lineage of Mirrors and a poetry editor for\u00a0<em>Freezeray Magazine<\/em>. He is also a co-founder of the Afrolatinx poetry collective Piel Cafe. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in publications such as\u00a0<em>Nepantla,\u00a0Rattle,\u00a0Ninth Letter,\u00a0Vinyl,\u00a0Prairie Schooner<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Adroit Journal<\/em>\u00a0among others.
