style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">On Tena\u2019s tenth birthday, her mother, emboldened by alcoholism and enraged by her husband\u2019s incessant cheating, walked out for good, instantly becoming an outcast surrogate mother and confidante\u2014even though she was raising nine of her own children and was not allowed to eat from the family\u2019s plates or use their bathroom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-7636372491977202284MsoNormalCxSpMiddle\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">It was Virgie\u2019s acceptance and unconditional love that gave Tena the courage to stand up to her domineering father, the faith to believe in her mother\u2019s love, and the strength to be her true self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Adding to the turmoil, Tena understood from a very young age that she was different from her three older sisters, all of whom had been beauty queens and majorettes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Tena didn\u2019t want to be a majorette\u2014she wanted to marry one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When she was nineteen, she came out as a lesbian to her mother, and then to her father, before ultimately leaving the South to pursue her dream of becoming a famous musician\u2014but Mississippi would always remain her home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">A powerful coming of age
