Church<\/strong>, the congregation of Denmark Vesey, a black revolutionary who plotted a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">massive slave insurrection in 1822.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">As early as 1865, former slaveholders and their descendants began working to preserve a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">romanticized memory of the antebellum South.
