Aaron Thier<\/strong> is the author of The Ghost Apple<\/strong><\/em> and Mr. Eternity<\/strong><\/em> (both semifinalists for the\u00a0<\/span>Thurber Prize for American Humor<\/strong>). A regular contributor to the Nation<\/em> and a graduate of Yale\u00a0<\/span>University and the M.F.A. program at the University of Florida, Thier received a 2016 NEA\u00a0<\/span>Fellowship in Creative Writing. He lives in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Young Miami couple Murphy and Eva have almost decided to have a\u00a0<\/span>baby when Yahweh, the Old Testament God, appears to Eva and makes\u00a0<\/span>unwelcome demands: He wants her to be his prophet. He also wants\u00a0<\/span>her to manage his social media presence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yahweh sends the two on a wild road trip across the country, making\u00a0<\/span>incomprehensible demands and mandating arcane rituals as they go. He\u00a0<\/span>gives them a hundred million dollars, but he asks them to use it to build\u00a0<\/span>a temple on top of a landfill. He forces them to endure a period of\u00a0<\/span>Biblical wandering in the deserts of the southwest. Along the way they are continually mistaken\u00a0<\/span>for another couple, a pair of North Carolina society people, and find themselves attending\u00a0<\/span>increasingly bizarre events in their names. At odds with their mission but helpless to disobey,\u00a0<\/span>Murphy and Eva search their surroundings for signs of a future they can have faith in.<\/span><\/p>\n
